Oil in brake servo, Failed P017 repair, what next?

Hi all,

I am a newbie to the forum and a newbie RRS owner.

I have just bought a 2007 RRS. It is a great car and I am head over heals with it. I have long wanted one but never been in the position to buy one until now.

It is in great condition and feels like driving a new car. It does though have its issues. None of which I am really bothered about as I am quite handy with the tools and got it for a VERY good price for a car with relatively little problems and relatively low mileage.

The tailgate doesn't shut properly, (or at least the car is saying it isn't) I am not too worried as it is shut and secure so that can wait.

More urgent is the brake issue.
It has the issue that should have been rectified with recall P017. The vacuum pump is sending oil to the master cylinder.
My local dealers have confirmed this and told me the recall was done in 2009 and charged me £154 to tell me what I already new and offered to fix it for £2000!! Censored Thanks.
My question to you guys is do you think I would be wasting my time asking JLR to foot the bill or just crack on and do it myself?
If its worth chasing JLR does anyone know who and how I contact JLR or do I just go to my dealer and ask them?
If I might as well do it myself does anyone have a guide to changing the vacuum pump? The rest I can do myself.

I think its worth a phone call to JLR HQ as your dealer seams useless.

Tell them its not safe, and the brake pedal keeps going to the floor Shocked

There are meant to repeat the recall if it hasn't worked.

I guess it's the same as for the D3's, initially they replaced the black plastic pipework (inverted "U" shape tubing), but if that didn't work the entire servo should have been replaced.
It wasn't unusual that the servo ended up being replaced. I don't know if there's a expiry date on the TSB though.

Thank you for your email, please accept my apologies for the delay in response I can assure you that no discourtesy was intended.

I am sorry to learn of your concern in regards to the P017 Recall. I'm afraid we will not look to contribute anything towards the repair as we believe the repair which was done in 2009 was robust and correct and we cannot guarantee the repair will not fail after 9 years.


I now this is not the outcome you expected however Should you wish to escalate this further please feel free to provide my contact details to the relevant parties as I would be happy to provide assistance.

Any suggestions?
Or shall i just fix it myself?

i had same issue last year.
recall repair was done 2009

LR dealer tried for 1 week to get LR UK to commit something to it.
he expected they might agreed to parts supply FOC but in the end LR UK woukdnt budge.

i think it is unacceptable to have recall on a safety item that is not followed through with a repair that is lifetime.
i never had any vehicle suffer brake master cylinder failure.
just another LR RRS Characteristic i guess..... poor design parts more like.

I will begin by expressing my disappointment at Jlr's decision. I would have expected a prestigious brand such as yours would have been much more pro active in fulfilling their duty of care.

As you are aware this is a major saftey concern for your brand and effected many vehicles.
I am a member on owners forums and have researched this issue and have found on multiple times the recall repair failing and being done again. This clearly shows that your statement that the repair was correct and robust is not correct.
I am aware that a repair to a vehicle cannot be guaranteed for 9 years but i would expect a saftey recall modification to a vehicle be expected to last the lifetime of the vehicle. This is not the case here. As mentioned earlier this vehicle has done just 95k miles, merley half what is expected of a vehicle of this supposed quality.

I will state again that this saftey issue is caused by a failure to robustly rectify a product recall. JLR are responsible under their duty of care to correct this major saftey issue.

It would be morrally and ethically wrong to expect an end user to correct the failings of a brand that relies heavily on its reputation such as yours.

I request that you escalate this issue and send me a copy of your complaint procedure

I have the same issue, my car was recalled in Apr 2010 and had "the work done". The previous owner who had the recall done, also in 2015 had a new servo fitted Shocked . My indie garage has confirmed there is oil in the servo and my brakes are very poor.
I have the car booked into JLR Stockport tomorrow for a free inspection of the servo, this is following a written complaint I made after visiting the above dealership and being ignored at the service desk for 20 minutes.

I will be using the same language as used above, the fact that this is a safety critical issue that they recognised as a design fault which must have a lifetime guarantee, after all the previous owner had to have the servo replaced only 5 years from the recall work. We're not talking about a cosmetic design fault or a frustrating rattle or rumble, God knows RRS has them Rolling with laughter

Hi All

Has anyone had any progress from Land Rover HQ on this issue. I have exactly the same problem, brake servo full of oil. Local Dealer states Recall Campaign has been ended by LR and LR stating the Recall was completed in 2010, so they have no obligation to fix it again even though the Recall has failed and the Servo is full of oil.
