Tow Bar Too Long?

Hi folks,

I'm a RRS newbie having bought one a few weeks ago. I also bought a second hand tow bar on eBay which doesn't seem to fit the properly. It appears to be too long to then lock into place.

Am I being an absolute muppet or could there be a problem?

Cheers in advance.
Alex

If it’s the detachable tow bar you’re talking about and specifically the attachment to the RRS then it might be that you just have to be more “assertive “ with it. But as Riverblanche says pics would help. Robin

Cheers for the replies guys.

It is the detachable tow bar. Where the arrow is, seems to be hitting the top of the houseing before the locking mechanism kicks in.

I tried to be assertive to the point of trying to jack the tow bar into position but it just won't fit.

Cheers again for any suggestions.

Sorry about stating what's probably the obvious, but have you checked the workings of the tow bar without it being fitted. As far as I can remember, if you push the little silver protrusion, then the tow bar locks into place. Obviously you can't fit it if the tow bar is in its locked position so just check that you are not trying to fit it whilst locked. Once again I'm sure you've sussed this but no harm in just checking... Robin

Hi Eaters,

Does the small pin completely retract? It seems to go half way in but not completely. I had wondered if this was normal?

Cheers

I'll go and check mine. Photos may follow but the pin doesn't disappear altogether even when locked. Robin

Mend with a disco 4 was having the same problem and he wasn't actually pulling out the spring loaded green sleeve where the key is. He had just turned the key and it won't go in unless you also pull the green bit so that you can see the red collar. Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Thanks for the assistance guys but I've tried and its like the large silver protrusion can't reach the hole on the receiver to go through and then lock into place. Could it be the receiver that's damaged?

That was exactly what was happening with my friends tow bar until he pulled the green bit away from the body Can you push the small silver pin in with your finger when it is unlocked ? Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

The receiver can rust inside and get full of all sorts of grime and dirt so would be best to clean that out first, then give it a spray of WD40 and have another go Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

Gooders, the small pin pushes in slightly but not a huge amount.

Buckster, I'll get the wire brush and WD40 out tomorrow and give it a go.

Cheers folks
