TDV8 Dr Tranny?

Hi There,
I was wondering if someone can help with the locating where to pour some Dr Tranny solution in my transmission?
I know there are numerous threads on it but I can't find one giving the location on a TDV8 loads for the V6!
I know it will probably mean a flush at some point but I would be interested to see if this has any short term
improvements?
Many Thanks. Regards,

Danny

Had mine added when i got the flush done, otherwise you would have to add it via the level plug,, assuming there is any free space. Bite the bullet and have a flush. 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!
Many years ago,,,,, 1955 series 1 landie , sometimes wish I had kept it

Hi Gogsy,
Thanks for the reply, I'm putting off the flush for the time being, I was recently quoted £499 for a gearbox flush
locally by a specialist and I'm just not prepared to pay that on the hope that it solves one of the many many things wrong with this thing, I'm still not sure if its a trans/TC issue or not despite 3 visits to the garage!
I don't want to start ranting but I'm not spending another unnecessary penny on it (servicing aside).
I know that the TDV6 (good info on the DISCO3 site) can have the Dr Tranny added from above but not sure about the TDV8?
so was hoping if it had a positive affect I may then consider a flush or TC or probably knowing my luck a full trans rebuild!
(not happening!!!) Regards,

Danny

You can add it via the oil pipe that feeds to the radiator, there is a post on here that has pictures showing exactly which pipe to remove So you can add it.

Hi Socast,
Thanks for the reply!
I will have another look through the threads and see if I can find that one,
Maybe I’ll try a different search this time?, not so much TDV8 info out there or
are they the same regarding transmissions? Regards,

Danny

Not on the TDV8. This has a separate cooler for the transmission. I doubt getting in to the cooler, removing one of the pipes and getting the Dr Tranny in without loosing fluid would be easy. Putting the Dr Tranny in via the gearbox fill plug would be easier. The vehicle does need to be lifted on one side to prevent the oil coming out of the fill plug though. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

They all use the same gearbox (although the SC and the TDV8 have slight internal differences to the TDV6, the externals are the same). The cooling arrangements differ between models, however. The TDV8 has a separate oil/water cooler where the SC and TDV6 use a cooler that is part of the radiator. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that they all have the same gearbox (facelift models have a different box) it's the ratios on the diff's that are different.

Censored !
Now I’m really confused!, I’m not getting under it I don’t have a suitable jack for starters
and I was just hoping to try something simple to give me an idea where to go next?, 70k and it’s ready for the
scrap heap!, suspension failure, turbos, doors that dont lock or don’t open diff leaks to list a few and now this!
It’s due a service in July so I’ll get them to look at it again!!! and drag it out to the end of the year then it’s gone!
Shame but there you go! Big Cry Regards,

Danny

I just spoke to another local LR Specialist they said, "we don't do flushes we will only change the oil and filter as the first stage
of a transmission issue, if that doesn't solve it we would recommend a transmission specialist next"
and the cost of this is £465!, I m sure I was seeing power flushes for almost half that price on here? Regards,

Danny

I paid £275 with Dr tranny added at Quattro autocare in Yorkshire, which seems to be an average price 2010 RRS, TDV8

Hi Gogsy,
Probably cheaper for me to drive to Yorkshire judging on the price I've just been given for an oil and filter change!
Anyone had a Power flush in the S.E Essex? Regards,

Danny

you probably better off starting at a specialist (rather for them to have to check someone else's work and charge you for it)

But you may as well just change the fluid yourself. (less than £100)

I do wonder what happens if you:

1) Loosen the level plug SLIGHTLY (just take the torque off it, to ensure you can undo it)
2) drain the gearbox sump
3) run the engine for 10 seconds and this might chuck some fluid out the torque convertor. , and out the sump drain.

If you have 2 pairs of hands a way to get more fluid out the TC / box is to.

1) loosen the drain sump plug and unwind it a few clicks.
2) chock the front wheels and apply park brake
3) have someone inside run the engine.
4) while engine running, pull the gearbox sump plug out and drain.
5) 15 seconds later, shout to the person to turn the engine off,

This would probably get you 5.5litres out.

To refil.
Ensure drain plug in!
Remove level plug and fill through the hole until it starts to dribble out (about 2 litres ish)
Run engine for 20 seconds and turn off.
Refill more oil through the hole until it starts to dribble out
Start engine and leave running
Refill more oil through the hole until it starts to dribble out.
Reinsert level plug and tighten .
Only now switch engine off.

Test drive car and recheck the gearbox level in the morning after a very short trip around the block.

Use 6 or 7 litres of this

Should be able to get it cheaper though.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the reply!
I know zilch about these transmissions and for that reason there is no way I would be happy running it that low on oil, is that not harmful to it?
All I hoped for was a simple way to add some Dr Tranny to see if there was even a hint of change even tone then that
might convince me that the problem is transmission related, otherwise I'm just throwing more money in the wrong direction,
If it was a TDV6 it would appear to be that simple but not on the Censored TDV8! Regards,

Danny

The SC (and I think the TDV8 too) has an extra planet gear and extra clutch plates in the gearbox to handle the extra grunt produced by the engine. Other than that they're all the same. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
