RR SPORT HSE TDV6 2.7 LOCKED UP SOLID

Hi to all a newbie 2ith many questions i need answering.my first dealings with rrs hse 2.7 but didnt go down the easy rd and buy from a dealer i bought a mint but non runner Whistle lol.my question is . I bought the car supposedly seized. The range came with the battery off and the starter off and egr off " i cant understand why these would be off ti check for a seized engine , i was reading thst Hdc causes a non start so maybe that was the reason ? Ive tried to put a bar on bottom pulley but wont move a cm in each direction wgich makes me thinj its not the crank ? Hydro locked maybe ? .The oil was full there are no leaks ive drained it off and its clear of anything no swarf metal etc the sumps off and nothing inside .ive tried a endoscope to look at crank but cant see much but baffle plate looks good no marks of impact from crank etc.so any suggestions of possible causes would be appreciated. But i have to say again the crank will not budge either direction. Thanks.M Thumbs Up

Thanks for the quick response but my head is wondering why there is no debris in the oil ,oil pan everything looks good no casing damage and the baffle plate looks ok ,could it be a torque converter failed and locked it up have you ever had this issue .when i originaly done a dianostic check it said it was stuck in second but i overlooked it as it was free wheeling but a failed touque would lock the engine .wouldnt it.ive attached a screen shot showing current gear in third but selector in park cheers m.

best whip the bottom end of the engine off.

You can then see the crank.

Remove FAN and the plastic fan surround.
Remove the aux belt tensioner/bracket.
Pull dip stick tube up SLIGHTLY. But don't remove from engine bay.
Disconnect turbo oil drain
etc.

Loosen upper sump and slide forwards and up by radiator.

small PAS pipes (on rack) will require disconnection briefly

Snapped crank doesn't necessarily leave metal fragments in the sump,if it is a clean break...

Failed torque converter wouldnt affect the engine turning over. A seized gearbox might, but that's something I have never seen or heard of in a 6HP box

I’d agree with Disco Mikey, the crank snapping would be an almost instant seize, a clean break will give very little in the way of debris and nothing else would get chance to grind with the result of debris. The gearbox in 2nd would also suggest it happened at slow speed, maybe even just about to move off as it often uses 2nd to start. 2012 5.0 SC AB

Thumbs Up A big thanks to the info and advice from all at least it settles my brain for 10 mins.I will pull off rest of the casing off to get a better look at the crank and damage if the crank has caught at low speed and maybe not yo much damage has anyone just replaced crank shell etc and got away with a light rebuild in situ of the bottom end. Cheers m.ps how the hell do you open a jammed tailgate its neither closedor open and the horn makes me jump out of my skin every night i lock it lol tbanks again. Rolling with laughter

you push the tailgate at the bottom, in the middle to close it.

and then electrically open


Cranks are £3K ? + pistons + head

LR engine is ~£5K with decent warranty

Whistle think it will be a second hand unit and strenghen as i go arp shells etc .cant justify a 5 k engine with weak cranks that could go at anytime .maybe a salvage jag thats been hit hard up the rear may be a cheaper solution will give the tailgate a shove at the bottom tommorow and see if it closes and then reopens on the button.cheers m.

Lol Thumbs Up just done the tailgate and now works as should lol neighbours were twitchung curtains lol just the easy engine build now and no doubt lots of helpfull help from this site xheers m.will get back with some photos tommorow on the crank situation .

Rolling Eyes my bad after having a good luck today ive found fine swarf in oil and little bits of shiney metal id say shells..maybe spun ? Overheated ? Still not took casing off yet been busy but might plug in diagnostics to see if theres any history on coolant faults.can anyone confirm pls if the crank can be pulled in situ.if its spun and got hot seized im wondering if can be done from underneath i get the impression looking at it it can be but rather ask.if not will pull the block with the body on .cheers m Thumbs Up ps.with not knowing the history if what happened im secind guessing at the moment. It may have been low on oil or coolant and someones just toped it up after what had happened thinking it would cure it .cheers m.

On a slightly lighter note i can say its a valuable asset to have sites like this and a credit to the people who run them..ive made several phone calls today to so called EXPERTS who are not interested in nothing but MONEY ! Its a embarrassment to people who are talented mechanics but dont run garages when youve got these people so called EXPERTS who try to b#@@$hit you on repairs and how the only way to do the job is there way..The truth of the mater is they never worked on another engine or veichle so they are scared of being wrong when suggestions are made .The truth of the mater is there FITTERS NOT MECHANICS..ps i know they are all not like that but up to now ive met a few. Rolling with laughter

I wouldn't bother looking for fault codes.

These engines don't require low fluid levels to fail!

I think your luck may start to run out on info from this forum. Think there are only a couple of people who know how to replace the crank. And what about your bent valves and damaged head (and chain /cam)

There is help for a replacement engine though.
