Parking Sensor - control box

2006 Sport. Having electrical problems with the parking sensors - it appears it might be the control box which I understand lives behind one of the wheel coverings in the boot? Left or Right side looking in from the back?? Is changing the box something I might possible be able to do myself? If its just a case of taking some of some trim off from in the boot I would be grateful for any advice as to how to achieve this and any problems I might encounter. Electrical tests have been made on the system and nothing has been found - typically when the tests have been made, all sensors have been working probable. Andrew Kennedy

It is on the left side.
Yes it is easy to change, however rarely at fault!

More likely causes:
Speaker next to control box (if you never hear a noise from the rear)
Sensors. (1 faulty sensor out of the 8 will shut the whole system down! )
Wiring behind bumpers.

rear parking sensors

Thanks Andy for your thoughts!! It's only the rear sensors that are a problem......Its 50/50 they either stay on permanently when in reverse or they behave themselves - any thoughts as to what I should be looking for out of your suggestions. Advice gratefully received. Andrew Andrew Kennedy

Something likely to knock out a PDC sensor on earlier RRS is using a pressure washer on then, can force water into a sensor and cause it to fail as can Road salt in the winter! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced

Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

1 rear sensor is faulty then.

Ideally you need a diagnostic tool to read the live distance values (e.g gap iid - expensive!) to see which one.

But it would be cheaper to buy 4 new sensors off ebay!
or 2 new sensors, if you fancy swapping them about until the fault goes aways

rear parking sensors

Thanks for the advice. So I will buy a couple of sensors for the rear and make the changes to see if I can find the one/s that are not working and hopefully that will solve the problem. Can you advice me exactly how I proceed to get at the rear sensors? and hopefully something I will be able to do?!? Andrew Kennedy

Remove rear left light if you wish to disconnect the loom.
Probably best to.
Remove 4 screw under the car
Remove the plastic from the top of the bumper.
The remove trim clips.

There are probably screws in the wheel arch which are the most difficult. And rusty

Pull bumper out from the sides the off

Push sensors out the rear of bumper.

Hello Andrew, this reminds me of an issue I had with my old 2006 RRS.
As you describe, they would either work fine or would play up and remain on continuously when in reverse.

I eventually got round to removing the rear bumper and found that the loom itself had been damaged. New loom ordered and replaced and all good again!

Something to look out for in case you do swap out the sensors and find that you are still having issues
