RRS MY10 Gearbox/Transfer box noise.

I have searched the posts and can find no reference to the latest problem that we are currently experiencing with our (my wifes...!) RRS. So here's hoping someone out there has had similar problems and can shed some light.
The car drives fine until you accelerate hard and then there is a loud ratcheting sound - weirdly if you are in the drivers seat it sounds as though it is coming from under the centre console, if you are in the passenger seat it sounds as though it is coming from the rear. Two garages have failed to find the fault as they were unable to replicate the noise unless they were driving, and no fault codes are logged. However an independent mechanic is certain that it is coming from either the gearbox &/or transfer box. He put the car on ramps and had a friend accelerate and brake at the same time while he was underneath. He has drained and replaced oils, and all appeared normal.

Has anyone had this problem? - Do you think his initial diagnosis is correct?
Do you think that it is worth trying to remove and inspect the transfer box whilst the gearbox is insitu?
Does the body have to come off to remove and replace the gearbox?

Obviously I would like to avoid removing the body, especially given that we have just replaced the engine!

Any help/comments/opinions would be gratefully received.
