Insect Screens & Turbo Timers

As a new owner of a 06 tdv6 I have 2 issues that I wish to raise:
Has anyone :
i) Sourced suitable insect screens for the front grille to prevent fin damage ?

ii) Sourced or researched the issue of turbo timers ?

Any thoughts or information would be appreciated...thanks

The best insect screens are agricultural ones....if you have a John Deere Tractor dealer near you I'd go there and have a look at the screens they use to protect the radiators/oil coolers....you could probably adapt one of those Smile

By turbo timers do you mean some method of maintaining oil pressure as the turbo spins down when you switch off the engine??

This is where with older Turbo diesels you had to let the engine idle for a few seconds before switching off to allow the turbo to spin down whilst oil pressure was maintained to stop the turbo seizing. I am waiting for my RRS to arrive in March so I cannot say what provision is made on the RRS. However, on my LR Discovery there is a small pressure pump/reservoir that maintains pressure and can be heard "whirring" if you switch off the engine and jump out quickly. I queried this with the dealer who explained its function. I cannot believe that if such a device was fitted to older Discoveries then it would not also have its equivalent on an RRS.

Thanks Guys
There are all sorts of issues placing something in the airstream forward of the
radiator/intercooler/condenser/oil coolers etc......I speak from experience in other machinery. Am hoping that somebody has tried screens that do not degrade the performance of the above items.
mlines.
My handbook says " ALWAYS allow the engine to idle for 10 seconds before switching off" I prefer longer after heavy loadings.
This doesn't always happen with different drivers ( I find it hard to remember at times ) My experience with Turbo diesels is that this procedure is critical to the engine/turbo longevity.

Re :whirring noise on shutdown caused by turbo oiling......mine shuts down abruptly with no extra noise apart from heat "tinkling"
Has the turbo shutdown feature been deleted from the v6 RRS ?

This on a TD5 Martin? If so I think you are hearing the centrifugal oil filter spin down, mine takes around 20secs to spin down when warm. Cheers

As for turbo timers with todays technology on the design of the bearings and the variable rate speed of the impeller etc there is no need for it.
The cooling and lubrication are quite sufficient.
As for the screens listen to LRT he is right about the John D ones, only thing is if you want a larger flat screen panel, to fabricate one yourself, then the one off the tractor or the combine harvestor will do.

NN
Turbo timer
Thanks for your input
I tended to agree with you ,however the instruction in the vehicle handbook had me worried.
Since then I have done some more research and I am told ,in this regard, even Landrover Aust. say to follow the handbook to the letter. The issue with an after market system is to keep all the electronics alive until after engine closes down.

The screens are another complex issue given what the airflow does.
I am the owner of a lot of agricultural equipment so am familiar with their screens.
Once again I am working towards finding the correct material and it seems that I will be making the final product myself.

If there is any interest i will post the details to the forum.

In the mean time I am dealing with a RRS gearbox with less than 3000kms that is SICK SICK SICK !
Cheers
Peter

Have you thought about looking at the motorsport products
They use a better quality but its more expensive- of course
Let us know what you make and what material

I'd endorse these comments, providing the engine is allowed some low speed time after a hard run then time at idle doesn't seem critical in my experience - let alone needing to force oil through post-shutdown. My TD5 has 175k MILES (>110k stage 2 tuned) on it on the original turbo, regular oil and filter changes and good quality oil seems to do the trick. Cheers

Agreed

Change oil and filter at 5000km !!!
Past results:
P38a 250000 and still strong
RRC 335000 ditto
various MB and Volvo trucks over 1m km without opening up the engines
LR series 3.(factory Isuzu 3.9 engine ) Speedo cable ripped out in the bush at over 300000km 5 years ago but still going.
