Another engine failure

Hi all

Mine is a MY2016 HSE D 306 and it appears to have suffered the crankshaft failure others have described. Two and half years old, 19700 miles.

It went yesterday afternoon when I was less than a mile away from my local dealer. I limped in and parked up outside the workshop. It sounded to me and the AA responder like the crankshaft ... horrible and depressing! The folks at Harwoods were very helpful and the AA guy was brilliant, even driving me all the way home.

The diagnosis is yet to come, of course. I await my substitute vehicle.

I know this has happened to others but am still amazed that it can. A design fault? I love my car and have been considering an upgrade to a new SVR towards the end of the year. Now I find my confidence on the wane ...

Will post updates when I have them.

Mike

I also hope this isn’t too serious. Mine is just under 29 months old with 18600 miles so very similar to the OP’s. It does worry me a little bit as we are off on a long trip soon, in the middle of winter with young kids.

Good luck Mike ... please keep us posted. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

If your crankshaft has snapped you won't be limping, you'll be stopped. Let's hope that means it's something less serious. Merc C220 estate Sport AMG

I’m sure I left a comment on here but it seems to have disappeared Confused
Same as Bill says,if crank had snapped you wouldn’t be driving it to dealers it would just stop.

But if it had spun a big end or main bearing, it would still run, albeit, sounding like a bag of spanners Thumbs Up

Positive? Really? Shocked

The only positive thing that happened here is it failed less than 3 years old. But 8ts something that should never have happened in the first place

Are all the SDV6's prone to this all years ? Is there a certain age more are common or is it just luck of the draw !!!

Must be bad steel if the cranks do snap !!

Or if a main bearing slips jams the crank and then it snaps the crankshaft as its such a force stopping so fast !!

My 2014 HSE Dynamic has 21,240 mile on the clock its a scary thought !!! This is even worse then the Td5' discovery 2 oil pump bolt coming loose !!!! Least you can prevent this !!!

I guess with the sdv6 some do and some don't ! Must be either bad steel for the crank or bad bearings for the crank !!!

Watching this thread with interest.

Cheers.

Tom.

Mine was exactly one year old, to the day I picked it up, and done about 18000 when the engine gave way completely! Crank shaft bearing went which totalled the bottom end! I Changed mine at two for a SVR, and have no regrets😁😁😁

A bit of an update ...

LR sorted the dealer to give me a FFRR AB to use, so was okay with that. I had to refuse an Evoque several times.

They have only just booked my car in today, so no ideas yet on what went wrong.

Hopefully, not more than a day or two to get a diagnosis.
