What's the verdict on the RRS 2.7 TDV6?

As per the title, what is the consensus on the 2.7 TDV6?

Petrol engines are more robust.

V6 diesels like to break in a bad way.

2007 models worst

There's nothing wrong with the 2.7TDV6 so long as you don't want performance. It's a bit under powered for a vehicle weighing 2.5-3 tonnes. Having said that, plenty of people use them for towing and are happy with them.

The 2.7 needs it's belts changing at 7 years / 105k miles whichever is sooner. Plenty don't get them done on schedule it seems. There was a batch that had a redesigned oil pump casing. This was fine until the belts were changed but had a history of failing not long after. A better oil pump casing is available and should be used. If you're looking at one of the bad batch now, it should have had its belts done in the last two years or so. You can check the pump to see which one is fitted. Plenty of information by searching on here and disco3.co.uk.

Other than that, the 2.7 suffers the same suspension bush life as all RRS. Early 2.7 came with relatively small wheels. The steering rack was later modified to allow for wheels up to 20 inch. An early 2.7 with big wheels might have a tired steering rack. No RRS came with bigger than 20 in wheel until the RRS2 came out so any 21 or 22in rims are not standard. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I bought (imported) a 2005 2.7 diesel in April this year and I love it. It had low mileage and had been sat still a long time. I splashed out and gave it a major service last month as I'm taking it with me to Portugal for good in a few weeks. Everything on the car works as it should. I simply love it and the help and advice on this site is great. Barrie.

Looked after correctly, they are fine

EGRs are Censored
Oil pumps are Censored

Allow for dealing with them as soon as you have bought the car

My replacement engine is now on 136k miles, and has not missed a beat Thumbs Up

My 2007 2.7 TDV6 has been very good and reliable, just touching 150k now, of which I've put on just under 60k. Serviced annually according to schedule.

Had the belts done on time, the EGRs blanked, a slight tune-up (still slow/sluggish but not as much as before) and I should get the oil pump done but keep forgetting.

Have had a bit of trouble with the MAF (replaced) and potentially one of the diesel pumps is faulty, though I've changed the diesel filter so will have to see if that sorts the issue.

Tows really well. Doesn't seem to make much difference to performance if you have nothing or 3t on the back. Just about to take mine for a 1k mile tow round UK/Ireland and I'm sure it'll be absolutely fine.

We bought ours in May 1 owner with 36k and FLRSH. We're completely satisfied with, decent amount of torque and I use ours everyday. It's got everything we'd want and it's not thirsty at all. Everything works and the only fault I've had was by a 3rd party. I wouldn't disregard a 2.7 over a 3.0 but think more down to the car you're looking at.

Fantastic car and purchased in July on a 2008 plate. Have owned shoguns , land cruisers Mercedes ml etc and it’s the by far the best car I have owned. Have towed into France and it was faultless

I had one for 3 years from 09 -12, no problems, performance was fine. The 2.7 is very smooth. Don’t discount it if you find a nice car.

Isn't the 2.7 also prone to breaking its crank? --

I test drove one, didn't feel that engine was appropriate for something with a badge saying 'Sport'. It actually felt dangerously slow pulling onto the dual carriageway on the test drive route.

could have had a bad turbo, (or leaking pipe)

they have adequate performance if you select sport mode on the gearbox

My 2005 TDV6 HSE has had egr's blanked and a remap and it is plenty quick enough for me.

This Thumbs Up

Performance is adequate, but really should have had the 220bhp a remap gives, from the factory Thumbs Up
