2013 RRS L320 SDV6 - Blue Smoke Under Hard Acceleration

Hi everyone,

I am experiencing a large cloud of blue smoke from the exhaust when under hard acceleration.

I have researched the possible causes and the most likely appears to be the oil drain pipe from the secondary turbo. Apparently this is a known fault and the subject of a Land Rover Technical Service Bulletin. I have been told that the secondary turbo does not 'kick in' until 3000 rpm and the oil drain pipe is not large enough to let the oil drain from the turbo so it ends up being burnt off.

The fix is to replace the oil drain pipe with a larger one which drains higher into the block allowing a better flow and curing the problem.

So my questions to forum member are:

1. Has anyone else had this problem and was it solved by fitting the new oil drain pipe?

2. Is there any other possible causes of this problem which should be investigated?

3. Has anyone had the oil drain pipe modification done by a LR Main Agent and what was the cost?

4. Has anyone had this work covered by the LR extended warranty, which is still valid on my car?

Thanks for any help or advice you can offer Thumbs Up

Steve

Yes, Yes but highly unlikely, No and No (design issues, apparently) Thumbs Up

Fairly straight forward repair, if a little fiddly. Couple hours labour, and from memory, £70 in parts
If it’s not causing any huge concern, it would be worthwhile leaving until timing belts/service is due, as the oil needs drained and starter motor removed Thumbs Up

Thanks Disco_Mikey Thumbs Up

In your considerable knowledge and experience could any secondary damage be caused by not having the modification fitted in the near future, my timing belt service is not due for another 2 years.

I very rarely find myself needing to exceed about 2500rpm through the gears and in the past 12 months can only remember seeing a blue smoke cloud behind me 3 times, presumably as the secondary turbo 'kicked in'.

Thanks again.

Steve

I had exactly the same problem on my D4 and this mod cured it. As for cost, it was paid for by LR not the LR Approved Warranty as it is a known design fault. Just point to them to the TSB. To get it done this way you have to use a main dealer.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Thanks LandPhil for your advice Thumbs Up

Did you approached Land Rover direct to argue your case for a goodwill free-of-charge modification in accordance with the TSB or did the Main Dealer approach Land Rover on your behalf?

I want to be fully prepared for when the Main Dealer inevitably tells me that I will have to pay for the modification.

Thanks again for the info Thumbs Up

Steve

Keep a close eye on the oil level, you are burning through it

The oil contamination may cause DPF issues

If belts are 2 years away, I'd have the modification done. Not a huge point in bringing the belts forward 2 years...
