What's the verdict on the RRS 3.0 TDV8 (Overfinch)?

Just wondered what to look our for on the RRS 3.5 TDV8 (Overfinch)

Example in question is a 2007 and has covered less than 40,000 miles

Hi,

I've been thru this list of things myself recently - there was a pdf document somewhere here - I think Paddi was the members name (author)...sorry I can't seem to find it right now - but surely someone will point you in the right direction...or just dig dig dig and you'll find it! Smile

As these cars are very complex - if you can, hire a specialist to come along with you when inspecting potential car. Odds are - this could save you quite some money in the short/medium/long term depending on your budget/patience/skill...

Good luck!

Hi Andrews, pleased to give you a few words on the 3.6 TDV8 as I'm on my second. My 07 did 130k miles without great issues and my present 60 plate is on 86k with no great problems. Tempting fate as I type Whistle
On all forums you will get more tales of woe than praises, as people with no trouble are less likely to post. So, you will see quite a lot of issues with TDV8's posted including the usual front suspension bushes/drop arms wearing, turbos failing, EGR's failing, and assorted electrical issues and dash warnings which can be as simple as a bulb blown or the tail gate lock rusting and throwing an electrical wobbly. The vehicle is 2.5 tonnes so you need to expect greater wear from suspension etc than your average car and the remedy isn't expensive. Mind you, the turbos are a costly issue.
I've said it before and say it again...get one with impeccable service history and if possible speak to the previous owner but I always run a good warranty as insurance.
The TDV8 gives great acceleration and is no more costly in fuel (in quantifiable terms of owning and running a prestige vehicle) than a 2.7 but they are rarer so you will need to look a little further.
Have fun Thumbs Up

There are many threads on this so have a browse but the old pdf I made will get you started:
http://www.rrsport.co.uk/gallery/albums/us...uide~0.pdf

Only my opinion but it seems to me the TDV8 has fewer known problems than the TDV6 and is much more powerful. The turbos are known to fail but the risk should be mitigated by sympathetic driving habits and reducing the time/mileage between oil and filter changes (and air filter!).

By the way, I'm intrigued by your choice of username. Andrews Heat for Hire famously sponsored successful rally driver Russell Brookes back in the '70s. Do you have a connection? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I only have experience of one, mine which I bought in March 2016 with 40k on it and now showing 71k. For me, apart from the obvious during your test drive to check EVERYTHING you can and listen for strange sounds when, for example checking that the car will go into access height and off road without complaint. Then get a top warranty and that does mean checking the small print.

There seems to be divided opinion on here about Overfinch alterations but a general consensus seems to be that you should not be paying more for those extras above an equivalent non-Overfinch Car. Might be worth searching Overfinch on here.

As RRSTDV8 (I think) on here says, in his sign off, it’s a labour of love, but in exchange you will get a fantastic car that makes you want to drive it every day - and that may be just down to the shops, or a 500 Road trip Thumbs Up Robin

No connection with the rally team unfortunately...a little before my time being a child of the mid 90s

Massive fan of the Escort and Chevette and have sort of adopted this name on other Escort based forums hence in the interests of continuity decided to roll with it on here.

Appreciate your thoughts and opinions folks...certainly food for thought!

Thanks once again.

Went to have another look at the car today.

Is there anything I should consider doing immediately following purchase if I decide to go for it?

I'd imagine a change of brake fluid, engine oil and gearbox oil might not go a miss?

Car sitting with less than 40,000 miles.

Get it into a specialist, and give it a good going over. They will then be able to advise on any work needing done, and prioritise it Thumbs Up
