FKarim, did you use low box and HDC for downhill and corners, it is quite a good aid even in normal TR settings in those conditions and if you think you might get stuck disabling the DSC works wonders.

Tim, I had no concerns about getting stuck whatsoever. Have a lot of confidence in the off-road gadgets and some experience of using them as well. Didn’t need low range. Don’t think it would have helped with braking on level surfaces, or would it? Engaged HDC once or twice downhill but it wasn’t doing anything as the slopes were gentle and I was slow enough. Just had some minor issues when braking or cornering while on compacted snow. I have never experienced that with winter tyres that’s all. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

Planning a trip this afternoon from home to my mum's 30 miles away.

Here (East Sussex), its about 7C, and sunny spells. No snow or any sign of it - but my mum has just rung from North Kent to say don't bother coming as she has large snow flakes falling and settling.

As has been said, even if your car can make it, you're still Censored if others can't. Robin

Must say that Southern and Central Scotland has clear blue skies and bitterly cold -6c with no wind this afternoon.

One issue I had driving on damp salty roads today was that the wind chill driving at speed on the motorway meant that while I got plenty of screen wash fluid ( I use neat -25c strength additive for the winter) once the wipers had given it’s programmed wipes the fluid still froze as an annoying thin thin opaque film of ice on the screen - cure was to switch on the front screen heater for a few minutes before pulling the stalk for a wash wipe. It must have been pretty cold on the screen at 70-80mph with an air temperature of -10c to freeze neat low temperature screen wash fluid! The nozzles never froze up during the trip though 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Super happy I’ve got my RRS

I have to say today was my first outing in heavy snow in the RRS and it was absolutely perfect

Had the wiper winter mode on last night thanks Tim in Scotland it’s a great tip for the defrosting took ten mins to clear the snow as it really annoys me seeing all the idiots with 3 inch top hats that blow of the roof in front of you

As we are a bit rural lots of hills to get to main roads I started of in mud and ruts and easily navigated the really thick lying snow in the lanes
HDC kicked in automatically on the steep down slopes and again no dramas

On the main roads I just left it in grass gravel snow again perfect

Thanks lots of great tips on winter driving on here especially about speed and you can’t out do physics even with a great 4x4

In London with the XC today (didn't go anywhere) but checking the cams on my place in Wales I saw the people staying in the cottage make a Censored mess of the grass in the yard when they came to get their van back in. Driver in the AWD pickup spinning it all over the place Rolling Eyes Watched him go over big lumps on the ground which, which are rocks meant to stop people driving on the grass Rolling Eyes He then got out and looked at the damage he'd done, righted a few stones and then b'd off Evil or Very Mad They then left their van facing upslope half on the grass, ready to drive off in the morning - like nfw will that happen after freezing all night.

Some people just don't have a clue and I'm not looking forward to seeing the damage after the snow goes Sad

Well in all honesty I`d probably make it to work but as said, with the minus 5 overnight, coming home would probably be a nightmare Sad A few people have rung in so it`s more or less shutdown anyway. Steve.

Just been out in the RRS with my son who is an LGV driver. I used the mud/snow setting and drove
it very gently, it was just about ok but I didn't have much confidence in its hill climbing performance.

He told me to give it more throttle and let the electronics do their stuff. I tried this and the difference
was amazing. It is just so capable and that's on cheap Chinese summer tyres.

Massively inmpessed Thumbs Up

Please folks don’t just go out to see how capable your car is - if you get stuck ( and the car is not invincible despite anything that you might think) you will then be causing even more problems for other drivers or even the emergency services.
Having said that, if you feel confident with your 4x4, have the right tyres and really really want to help out then either register with your local 4x4 Emergency Response Group who make arrangements to get emergency services to remote places that may be snowed in or register with your local police that you are prepared to help out with transporting doctors/ patients/ elderly/ meals on wheels etc. There are organised 4x4 rescue groups all over the UK and they really would appreciate help from 4x4 owners at this time of the year 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Well said Tim, and there are many County’s that have 4X4 Response groups that are always looking to take on members. There is usually opportunity’s for on and offroad driver training courses funded by them as well in return for a small amount of your time Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

Tim and Buckster,

Please don't get the impression that I am advocating driving irresponsibly or dangerously. I really am not.

I was just trying to describe how advanced and effective the electronic aids on even the earliest RRS models are.

My initial very gentle driving style in snow was pretty ineffective, it was only when I slightly increased throttle input that
the electronics aids kicked in and made the RRS work as it should.

If I didnt need to use the car tomorrow, I would have left it on the drive. But I do, so thats why I took it out and checked
it out.

Phill, the comments were not meant to be aimed at you but the audience in general - my apologies if they were taken that way as that was not what was intended. More RRS owners should get out in the right conditions and find out just what their cars can do before the snow comes down - driving in mud can give a very good impression of driving in snowy and icy conditions and can be great fun without damaging the car unlike driving on ice or compacted snow which can have an expensive ending... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

No I was just backing up Tim’s comments regarding the 4X4 response groups, they do some very important work at this time of the year getting to elderly people in rural communities or delivering supplies or medical professionals to remote locations in bad weather Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

Until I saw this about 4x4 help groups on Twitter earlier, I had no idea such a service existed. Well done to anyone who participates in this Bow down Steve.
