United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Fuji White

Ive told him to get a solicitor involved as it clearly states in the warranty book that the crank is covered. The chap gave good money for the car because it still had 12 months warranty remaining.

Tyrefitter,

It would be nice to know when a fault becomes a common fault because Land Rover certainly don’t advertise that faults are common. In fact if people didn’t have knowledge of this and other forums then the majority would just listen to the stealerships saying things like “ oh, we’ve never come across this before” to “ oh, yes that’s a common fault which we don’t cover”...... This instance certainly stinks and your advice of getting a Solicitor is very right, seeing as that it is covered by the Warranty as stated and written by Land Rover in the Warranty Booklet. Maybe getting the local paper involved and perhaps television if nothing is resolved. Absolutely disgusting. Censored Censored Censored

If its a common fault,,even without a warranty at 30000 miles & just over 3 years old LR should put it right.

Australia 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Santorini Black

I had the following items replaced/fixed by my local dealer during its warranty period:
- Front ARB bushes replaced 2 times.
- Airconditioning compressor replaced 4 times.
- Air suspension compressor replaced 3 times.
- Rear differential replaced 2 times.
- Front differential replaced once.
- Transfer case overhauled.
- Tranmission mechatronics replaced.
- Front and rear drive shafts replaced.
- Rear axle CV boots replaced.
- Battery replaced.
- Tail gate striker assembly replaced.
- HVAC temperature controls/fan control replaced.
- IPOD lead replaced.
- Drivers seat foam and leather replaced.
- Centre console hockey sticks replaced.
- Valence in front of windscreen replaced.
- Dashboard pulled apart many times to fix rattles and squeaks.

So you would think just replacing an engine under warranty wouldnt be a problem.

Something is not right here.

If a failure is a "common fault" that is zero excuse not to honour a warranty that is still in force. In fact such an admission by a manufacturer would and should lead to a claim under Consumer protection legislation, as it could not be "fit for purpose".

Was this vehicle actually still under warranty? Or "just out"?

Who exactly made that comment to the unfortunate owner? MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

If the buyer of Tyrefitter’s old car took out finance then he needs to get he finance company involved asap. Land Rover will listen to them rather than try to scare off an individual, the buyer also need to get as many of the motoring magazines involved as possible, especially What Car? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

As Tyrefitter states, I have just had my Enhanced LR warranty renewed at £1300.00 and on reading new "updated" booklet of cover etc, it still quiet clearly states that Crank is covered by the warranty, the purchasers solicitor should chase up using the wording of warranty. It is hardly the customers fault if something "common" breaks, (unless due to not following normal servicing and maintenance), this should therefore be covered, and this should also be taken up with trading standards and sale of goods act, as car wasn't fit for purpose when purchased. Also send story to Auto Express and Autotrader magazines which will publish and normally get a reply from manufacturer.
All approved LR cars purchased from LR dealerships, come with a full LR warranty for two years, not two weeks as it now appears.
Disgusting customer service and a warranty that isn't worth the cost of paper it's printed on, perhaps LR owners should get rid of cars while they still can! Censored John

Warranties are designed to cover items that are faulty. Whether it’s a “common” fault or a one off is irrelevant. So if the item is mentioned in the warranty as covered then common or not it should be fixed.

Furthermore warranty aside, under the sale of goods act the item must be “of merchantable quality” in other words fit for purpose. If not the buyer has right of redress.

Definitely if no action from the seller or LR then solicitor is the way forward. And as much publicity as possible. Robin

Crank failure

I know of two friends who have had crank failures on this engine in RR Sport & Discovery, it is a known fault that Land Rover are aware of and have even paid for in full when the car is out of warranty.

Here is the technical notice -

Discovery 3 / L319
Range Rover / L405

Title Crankshaft/Crankshaft Bearing Concerns - TDv6 Diesel Engine
Category Engine
Last modified 06-May-2014 00:00:00
Symptom 499000 Basic Engine

Content
Issue:
Crankshaft/crankshaft bearing failure - TDv6 Diesel Engine.
Cause:
Low incidence of crankshaft failure are being encountered, caused mainly by incorrect location of the main bearing shells during assembly, or through rotation of the shells during normal use. A new procedure has been implemented to ensure:
- more rapid resolution of customer concerns, and
- greater visibility of failure modes in order to improve repair process and parts delivery.

Action:
For any suspected crankshaft/bearing failure, please contact your local Dealer Technical Supportor FRED team for details of the enhanced customer handling procedure.
The list below summarises typical symptoms of crankshaft/bearing failure, but please contact your DTS/FRED team if in any doubt as they will be pleased to offer assistance:
· Crankshaft is seized, engine cannot be turned either via starter motor or crankshaft pulley bolt.
· Oil sump or engine cylinder block is holed, with oil leakage and/or metallic debris found on engine under-tray.
· Engine makes a loud ‘rumbling/knocking’ sound when running which worsens as the engine is placed under load. The engine oil pressure warning light may flash or be continuously illuminated, especially at low engine speeds.

Land Rover need to man up and give all owners confidence that if they have an engine failure due to the crank that it will be covered.

Maybe we should start a seperate thread with a poll to record how many people we know that have experienced crank failure, this way it may have to become a safety issue and be subject to a VOSA recall on these grounds.

Just a thought... Rolling Eyes

I agree with Tim here. Make sure the magazine gets the bit about LR claiming it's a "common fault" too. Even the dimwits at LR won't want that sort of story in the mainstream motoring press.

What amazes me is that LR think that "common fault" is an excuse. That is them effectively admitting that they don't make the vehicle to a high enough standard to be considered to be fit for purpose. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I seem to remember you saying that you hadn't transferred the warranty immediately. Is that correct? The warranty booklet says that transfers should be done within 7 days (I think). I'd hate to think they might use that as an excuse... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

That is true,,it wasn’t transferred straight away, when I spoke to LR customer services they said it isn’t a problem changing warranty to new owner as it belongs to car not owner, but a 3year old car with only just over 30k miles shouldn’t fail like this,,the service was only done a few months before this happened & was done at a LR dealer,I could have done the service myself with being vat registered but I let LR do it just incase anything like this happened they couldn’t use that to get out of doing any warranty work on car.
