Rusty Wheel Nuts

Hi everyone,

I have received some really good advice and technical assistance with my RRS on this forum so I decided that it was about time that I contributed to the forum. This is my first DIY guide, so please be kind with your comments Thumbs Up

Today I noticed some corrosion sitting in the alloy wheel nut recesses and decided to investigate.

Here is what it looked like

And here with the nut removed

The corrosion is coming from the steel washers and nuts

So I wire brushed the corrosion and then finished off with wire wool

Also cleaned the corrosion from the alloy wheel nut recess and from the nut top face with T cut

Liberally applied copper grease to the steel washer and nut

Refitted the five nuts and job done, hopefully no more corrosion

I hope that this will help other Thumbs Up

Steve

I think the advise is not to put that much grease on as you don't want the thing to become loose.

People also have a problem with the nut part rusting and swelling and then unable to get (the correct sized) socket on.

Recently Had the swollen nuts issue Razz When I took it in for a service they said I had 9 swollen nuts Big Cry since replacing I have noticed a slight wheel vibration I had has now disappeared completely which has saved a trip to my tyre guy Thumbs Up

Must admit though I don’t not ever put the copper grease on the threaded bit

No reason not to put small amount on threads, have been doing it for year's on all sorts of vehicles and never had any issues with loose wheels or seized/corroded nut's. I always use a torque wrench though. Thumbs Up

I seem to have stirred up a discussion on the use of copper grease, which was not my intention!

I am with you Col, a small amount of copper grease on a bolt thread and the bolt tightened to the correct torque has always been my philosophy Thumbs Up

I was taught that any moving parts like bearings that needs lubrication should have standard multi-purpose grease applied and anything that is static like a bolt thread apply a small amount of copper grease to prevent corrosion and seizing. Always using a torque wrench of course to ensure the correct torque when tightening.

Do you adjust your torque setting for wet thread, the book value is probably for a clean dry thread... Twisted Evil 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

Nope, as L/R don't specify lubricated or not just torque them up to required torque and that's it, as I said never had a issue it 35+ years so happy with that, although admittedly I believe there is a formula to calculate variations but you need to know whether the bolts/nut's are plated i.e Zinc, Phosphate, Cadmium etc. as well.

I used to have a copy of a chart listing all the torque value adjustments, but will admit I also never use it (no idea where it is now either). From memory it went as far as different lubrication value's in oils, like thin oil, thick oil, grease etc. I was hoping the little devil after it might hint at a bit of sarcasm...

I feel chuffed with myself when I actually use a torque wrench rather than the 'how hard to jump on the ratchet lever' method Wink 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine
