Running a RRS without Warranty? SDV6 Advice... New Owner

Hi All,

Having previously had a 62 plate RRS I am now after another.

My last one had a LR Approved warranty so wasn't an issue. I'm not looking at some without warranty.

My questions is, given the so called chocolate crankshaft issue (on forums!), who is running their RR Sport without warranty?

I have seen some nice examples but, as always, internet horror stories of new engines are a little scary... obviously I'm sure this accounts for less than 1% of cars though...

Anyway, 12 plate, under 90k miles for sub 20k. Is it worth running the risk of no warranty? Obviously I have a little contingency fund but not to be paying for new engines!

Thanks for advice in advance!

I thought it was all SDV6 cars, if not then that's good news! The rest of problems don't really bother me, just 7-10k for an engine does!

I sold my 62 plate a while back... currently without motor and borrowing other half's 206. It's a pretty painful experience!

i to thought it was most of the V6 engines that could possibly develop crank issues Thumbs Up

Any V6. Warranty is piece of mind but all depends on your approach to risk Thumbs Up Whistle
I wouldn't run it without and have extended my 2 year LR warranty into year 3.
Year 4 will either extend LR one again or go Warranty Direct etc Thumbs Up Visitor from fullfatrr.com

I would run without if I didn't think there was a chance of the engine going pop!

And that right there is exactly why I'm trying to find one in warranty!

Had mone four months now without warranty. Its a 2012 HSE Lux with 45k miles. Just had it serviced by my Indie including all fluids and to LR spec. It might bite me but every month without warranty is roughly £100 in my pocket. If it goes bang I'll just have to deal with it - or throw it away.

Just remember to put the £100 aside for any rainy day! Wink

Hi,
we had run ours two years with the Approved Warranty and had the Fuel sender wires, a new FBH and the o/s/f wheel bearing changed under it.
But
had ran it for another 6 months out of warranty and fully intended to keep it (had looked at warranty but decided not to) if we did not find a RRS2 to change to before getting to the 7 year service in December,
if we had spent the money on the service and maybe some preventative maintenance then we would have kept it for another year or two

it maybe helps that we had the car for a couple of years already, if you don't know the car before buying it Question

Thumbs Up

I had a LR extended warranty when my 2010 TDV6 had bottom end failure the other week (suspected crank) at 64k miles so a new engine prescribed.

The extended warranty only covers the first £3k so the dealership asked for a goodwill gesture from LR (it has LR FSH and was bought from the dealer group) as an engine should not fail this early. I was expecting at best a 50% contribution, but LR surprisingly emailed authorising full costs on the house. Full marks to the dealer in this instance as they have been very helpful and totally on my side.

Therefore I don't know if my having an LR warranty and main dealer FSH helped with their decision - they did ask these questions as well as how many LR's I have owned before when goodwill was requested (none in my case) - but after this experience, I wouldn't drive a RRS without some kind of warranty. Had LR not covered it, I would have had to either get a recon engine or sold it as a non runner as the cost of a new engine fitted would exceed the value of the car.

Having said that - even if your car is out of warranty, as long as it has been serviced correctly and is less than 7 years old it is possible you might be able to get some kind of goodwill gesture from HQ if something similar happens.

I would query that. If you have the enhanced LR warranty* (cost around up to £1250) this covers you for repairs up to the price you paid for car from a LR dealership.
*It must be under 100,000 miles at time of taking out warranty, no age limit.

But the LR Approved car warranty with 2 year guarantee, MOT warranty, 2 year LR recovery service, Off road driving experience etc, supplied with most used LR sales, your car must also be under five years old. John

I have just had another look - you're correct, the extended warranty I have covers any single claim up to the value of the vehicle.
The cheaper Select extended warranty which I was referring to has a £3k limit on any single claim.
I guess in this case I ticked the correct box when buying the extended warranty.
