MOT & Parking Brake

I am REALLY upset!!

I bought my new (to me) RRS on Monday. I had booked it in to my MOT station to get it registered. Everything was going well until the brake test.

The chap got it, drove on to the rollers, and front brakes were fine.

Back brakes... fine

Handbrake... He fiddled with the button, on, off, on, off, on, off, all with the wheels turning, and suddenly SSSCCRREEAACCHH!!!!! One back wheel COMPLETELY blocked.

Now when we try to take the EPB off, there is this loud scraping screeching noise, and then flashing EPB light on the dashboard.

THEY HAVE BROKEN MY EPB!!!!!!!!!!!

They won't even accept responsibility!!

Has anyone had this type of thing happen to them?

I know that the D3 had big problems with the EPB at the beginning, but have these problems been resolved?

Should I simply put it in park instead of using the EPB?

Rear brakes sound like they need adjustment was it a 4 whel brake machine as normally they take them for a run around the block with a mobile brake machine Thumbs Up

No... it is a two wheel device that spins the wheels in opposite directions and then only test one wheel at a time.

At the moment the car is at a local garage, and they are going to look at it at the beginning of the week.

I have ordered a new "module" because I think that the cogs inside have had their teeth stripped (sadly!!).

I find it amazing that they can simply force people to test their EPB this way when it can break the system.

WHY didn't the tester use the decelerometer brake test.? I don't know of a roller brake tester that does constant 4 wheel drives.

Sadly, they test ALL vehicles here this way. They don't ever test using a Decelerometer.

Do you happen to know if there is any documentation from LR that say they should not test the brakes in this way?

I have been told that i can send thr invoice to them, and if i can show that the damage was cause by their mistake, then their insurance will cover the bill.

The rollers they use here rotate the two wheels in oposite directions, as it stated in that link.
Does that mean that their roller system is in fact OK for the LR?

Ive NEVER done RRS or FFRR in the rollers,,you can do the park brake in them but it has to be done correctly so not to do damage.

There are set procedures for testin an EPB on a 4x4.

Unless the tester is really confident, most use an old school Tapley meter.
I can't comment on the likelihood of your tester damaging your EPB, but I suggest you carry on googling.

Well.... the brakes have been replaced. The electronic module has been replaced.

When we were doing the work, we discovered that the rear brake pipes were VERY badly corroded, so off they came. We cut them half way along the length of the car, and fitted new pipes.

We are halfway through changing the timing belt. We in fact discovered that the belt has been replaced already at some point, which is good to know, but we are going to replace it again anyway. Better to be safe, and since we have the cover off, why not.

So... she should be finished tomorrow, and then I have an appointment for the MOT on Friday.

Fingers crossed... I hope everything will be OK.

Sound as if you are very busy there.
I have been told you must be very careful doing brake tests with 4x4s and Electronic Park Brake, on rolling roads unless operator knows what they are doing. Depending on speed you can cause damage to, and I hope this hasn't happened here. John

nebc100 you dont list what car you have but you do mention timing belt so I assume a TDV6 - if a 2.7, did you check you have the later oil pump - shame to have done all that work and have the old oil pump still on the car.

Also given that the EPB only applies the drums to hold the car when parked but when used as an emergency brake when the car is moving it does not work the drums but applies the entire braking system (I am not sure what speed this kicks in but it is low) I am surprised they are testing the EPB on a rolling road.
