Air suspension fault - sitting on bump stops

Hi,

I work away from home ( 3 weeks on - 3 weeks off ) normally when i return home my car has lost all of the air in the system and is sitting on its bump stops. is this normal ????

As soon as i start the car up the compressor kicks in and fills the system up and its business as usual.. the car lowers , raises and works perfectly.

However ,

when i returned from work today the car was sitting on its bump stops as before, i started the car and as usual the compressor kicked in, i tried to put the suspension through its full range of movement as it had been sitting for 3 weeks , firstly a warning came up saying that only normal height was available ,then a warning that the compressor was running slowly, then after the normal switching on / off of the engine the compressor basically stopped working ( I couldn't hear it ) and the car car dropped to its bump stop sand wont move and there is a warning message saying " suspension fault "

the vehicle info display with the car tyres and little white lines looks as if the car is in "Off Road height" when in reality its sitting on bump stops

there is a decent independent land rover garage near my home but... im about 250 miles away from home , is it safe to drive home on the bump stops ? and does anyone have any an idea what may be up with it ??

any advice / comments are greatly appreciated

Don't drive it on bump stops.

Sorry to hear your problems.
Where are you? Maybe someone could suggest a local specialist. As you say - doubtful that RAC can fix it but they will probably try reading the fault codes and clearing them.
Most likely situation is that your air suspension has had a leak for some time so the compressor has been working harder than usual to maintain pressure. Now the compressor has failed. This is a common situation. If this is the case then you need to identify any leaks and fix them and fit a new compressor.
Common leak is a cracked cap on the compressor. Other popular leak points are the valve blocks and air bags.
You could drive a short distance very carefully but definitely not 250 miles home.
Good luck - hope you can find someone good to look at it in your present location. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

hi ,

thank you for your comments

Im currently in Aberdeen , I have been looking to see if there are any Land rover specialists close by and have found couple.

to be honest it wouldnt surprise me if one of the air bags and compressor have gone ....so im probably looking at a expensive repair bill .

I was hoping to get it back to the north east as there is a brilliant LR specialist near sunderland i use ...

but the RAC may only take it to a local garage

the compressor was working though at first ..... and then just died , you never know i might get lucky !

I suspect you have a small air leak somewhere in the system, the car should not be on bump stops after just 3 weeks. The compressor has probably worn out because it is overworking to compensate for the leak. My son had a similar issue with his L322.

If you have the LR assistance, either original 2 year warranty or full annual extension up to 10 years 100,000 miles, they will take your car to the dealer of choice, unlike normal AA, Green Flag and RAC membership. They took mine 170 miles from Wales to Pickering to get sorted. Very impressed. Thumbs Up John
