Steering Wheel Wobble

Okay guys little bit of help needed. My car has just been into an independent specialist and they have serviced it including changing all the discs/pads, front/rear antiroll bar mount bushes, both front wishbone rear mount bushes and replaced both rear track adjust arms, carried out four wheel alignment check and adjust with it all now showing green on the alignment sheet.
I went for Powerflex Polybushes as I have used them on previous vehicles (albeit not range rovers) and liked how they help the handling/feel. All is good and the car drives a lot better apart from when I get to motorway speeds. Under 70mph it is as smooth as you like but after 70mph and faster it has a steering wheel wobble that gets progressively worse and is bloody annoying!
I have rung the garage his morning (unfortunately they are over an hour away) and they said at those speeds in their opinion it should be the wheel balancing. Does this sound right to you? It wasn’t there before the car went into the garage so will obviously be something to do with the above. I am hoping that they have just disturbed a wheel weight whilst they have been taking the wheels off/on.
Of note I noticed that the wheels hadn’t been put back on the same corner although the tyres are all Pirelli Scorpion Verde all season tyres 275/45/20 and have only done 700 miles since they were fitted a month ago so hoping its nothing to do with the tyres!

Any help or expert knowledge as to what you think it might be would be appreciated. Range Rover Sport 2010 3.0 TDV6 HSE in Black

I had this shortly after new discs and pads, because the pistons were pushed back into the calipers, they were sticking slightly causing two (left rear and right front) to bind and overheat, giving chronic wheel shimmy at high speed.
Pulled over after a spell of this vibration and the two offending corners had hot wheels to the touch.
I replaced the rear caliper which solved that issue, the front repaired itself after another 100 or so miles.
Worth checking you're not suffering the same

You just reminded me both rear callipers were also replaced because the bleed nipples were seized!
I am going to investigate a bit more on my way home whilst driving and do some braking see what the wheel temps are like when I get home or if it might release a slightly sticky calliper. Range Rover Sport 2010 3.0 TDV6 HSE in Black

Give it the beans to induce the vibration then pull over and check the wheel temps. Any hot wheels will reveal you have sticking callipers.

Thumbs Up

What speed is the steering vibrating.?if its say 70 the take it to about 80-85 & see if it cures it,if so its wheels need balancing & if not its something else. You will get steering wheel wobble if fronts need balancing,,if its coming from the rear you will feel vibration through seat & car body.

The vibration comes on at exactly 70mph and so far I have taken it to 90 and all it did was get worse! Range Rover Sport 2010 3.0 TDV6 HSE in Black

I had a similar issue when i picked up my 2010 TDV8 2 years ago. It had just had new Continental tyres all round. i took it to have the tracking checked, and whilst it was slightly out, the main issue identified was the wheels had been "balanced" the wrong way, so the weights were on the opposite side to where they were needed. Once corrected the wobble was resolved. Cost: £50-60.

The wheel is fully on isn't it?. Had a Golf once with wheel wobble and it was 2 loose wheel nuts, after just having it service. Tightening cured it instantly. Whistle

Rather annoyingly I have now had my wheels balanced and it has made no difference at all. I think the best option is to take it back to the garage that did all the work as it wasn't there before the work was completed.

Hi Chunk11
Just my two pennies worth and something to think about .

I had the same symptoms a few weeks back, after fitting a "NEW" wheel bearing !
After stripping everything down numerous times to check I hadn't done anything wrong , I was at a loss .
Turned out it was a faulty bearing ? Exchanged it for another one and been wobble free ever since Thumbs Up

Thanks Devon

I will keep that in mind although in my head I keep thinking it is something that the garage must have done as it wasn't there before so hopefully my logic makes sense.

Cheers,

Reading the OP again, you say they changed the rear bushes only on the front lower arms. These were replaced with Polybushes? I wonder if that's the problem - the rear and bushes are Polybushes and the fronts are the original spec and, presumably, worn to some degree.

I would have thought that you should go for either all original type bushes or all polybushes. There are lots of bushes and the vehicle has a lot of adjustment built in to the suspension. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Put the wheels back where they came from. that might help. you should absolutely do this if your tires are directional.
then they should remain on the same side of the truck. RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux

Okay guys thought I would update you as the problem has been solved! The wheels were swapped back around and put back where they were when I had originally dropped the car off. Back to having no steering wheel wobble!

Not really sure why this would make such a difference as I was thinking I might rotate them front to back in about a year but might leave it after having the above issues. Range Rover Sport 2010 3.0 TDV6 HSE in Black
