Top Turbo Hose???? Black smoke

Me again. Not a great couple of weeks, first a major milk spillage. Thank you all for the ways to get rid of that smell and how to give if a proper clean.

However when my wife was driving back from London on the weekend. She had a loss of power and a message pop up "system engine failure" she thinks it said. Now she says that she was going a little north of 70mph when it happened. Pulled over restarted the car and all back to normal. The car felt like it was struggling for a while but then fine. It also did it on a hill near home.

As soon as she was back I check to see if there was any smoke coming out the back. Not a lot but a little black smoke when you really rev. After a quick look through this forum I narrowed it down to be the top turbo hose (I hope).

Took it down my local and told them what I thought. They couldn’t find a split but said one of the sensor was extremely dirty so gave it a clean. All work fine for a day (still black smoke tho) and then same thing happened again but only on a steep hill. The local said they will order a new sensor. I also just got to work after driving it in and it drove lovely. I even gave it some heavy footing.

But I have a question about the hoses. One of the hoses is considerably softer than the other. Is this how it should be? Should I just replace the top hoses to rule of that possible being the problem?

Sorry to rant on. Thanks again

It could be that the material is simply old. I've had it on other turbo cars with a few years on them and its simply degradation. Back in the day of Cossie ownership some of the BIG boost cars could suck close the standard hoses, then the metal versions started to come out.

Steve.

Thanks for the reply stevepd

So after having a good look over the hoses. I have found the split and not a little split. Not really sure how the missed it. Unless it got bigger over the last couple of days.

Has anyone used silicon hose instead of the LR hoses? I’ve been told they are much more reliable. Any thoughts?

The top hoses don't split that often - they seem to last several years at least - so a "more reliable" hose is an odd idea. Silicone hoses are 2 or 3 times the price of the LR version so probably a false economy. They are cool though. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

RRSTDV8 i went with the LR part. Its already an old rig so im sure the rubber hose will out live the rest of the car. I hadnt looked at the prices of the silicone either.

Fitted the part last night. Such a big difference. Seemed to sound better, gear change better and felt like it had so much power. I'm now wondering if there has been a small split in it since my ownership (4month) because its never felt so nice to drive. Thumbs Up

Hi Ferret15. Pleased to read you got it sorted. Out of interest, how much did you pay for the hose and was it fairly easy to do? Barrie.

BJH1959 they are nice and cheap eBay £25.00 here is a link

And it’s probably the easiest job you will ever do on a RRS. You basically lift up the engine cover for easy access. Undo the screw, bolt what every you want to call it. Take the split hose out and replace.

The instant difference is unbelievable. Still has a bit of black smoke but I guess it will take some time for the system to clean out.

The link is for the LH Turbo hose. I think the RH is maybe even a little cheaper.
