Black smoke

Hi,
Every now and again when I accelerate and the car goes into 2nd gear there is a huge amount of black smoke that comes from the back of the car, when I say large amount I mean it covers the whole road behind. I've seen people mention about small jurneys and the exhaust needs a good run but the amount of smoke is very concerning. I've noticed that the tailpipes are very sooted up as well. Can anyone shed any light on this, I've got a sport hse diesel.

Cheers

Split intercooler hose is a likely culprit.

Any loss of power?

Had Similar issues with a discovery TDV 6...turned out to be injectors. Smoke was worse when vehicle had been idling for a while. Hope this helps.

No loss of power and no warnings on the dash.
If it was injectors would it not do it all the time ?
I'll see if there is any splits in the intercooler hose.

Cheers

My sdv6. Used to smoke occasionally, I always put it down to the car only doing short journeys and getting choked up, then when accelerating hard it would cause the soot in the exhaust to be blown out , would be fine for a few months after clearing

As previously suggested by another member..intercooler hose may be the culprit..after advice from this site I checked that first on mine but it was ok...She smoked more at low speeds but was hardly noticeable when at motorway speeds.
Huge clouds of smoke when sitting in traffic.

Mine doesn't smoke at all when driving or putting your foot down, just every now and again it's as if the engine coughs and a huge plume of smoke comes out the exhausts, it was that bad the car behinds headlights came on.
If it was a split hose it would smoke all the time wouldn't it?

Cheers

We don't know what engine it has because the OP hasn't told us or filled in their profile. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Right guys, had it checked for faults and not a one came up. My girlfriend drives this to work every day about 4 miles away and never goes over 30 or boots it, I've just been out in it and a bit of smoke came out when I first put my foot down but then nothing at all came out. We drove on the motorway and kicked it down 2 or 3 times and everything was great with plenty of power, I going to put it down to it needs a good boot at least once a week.

Cheers for your help guys and I will fill my profile in 👍
