3 Year Old - Leaking Diff

Hi there,

Just had my 3 yr service and have a leaking rear diff deal.

Was quoted £950 for the repair though was completed under warranty. All good right..

But the more I think about it though. I ok'd the repair at 0900. The dealer had the car for another 5 hours. How does one get a quote of £950?! One hundred quid an hour plus oil? Can that repair even be done that quickly. I'm thinking about disconnecting the driveshafts, dropping the diff. New seal. Oil. Reverse.

Thoughts?

Regards

I believe the leaking diff is relatively common on L494, I have patches of oil on my gravel drive that are either at the back of the RRS or the front of my Defender............... Def I know drips oil but not sure if it is the RRS diff. The car was serviced in May and no remarks were made by the local LR Dealership who carried out the service so have to assume it is the 90 that is marking its territory! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

£100/hr is way below normal main dealer labour rates.

Try more like £150/hr. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

My 2014 had a leaking pinion seal on the rear diff when I bought it 4 months ago. Manifested by drips on my drive within a couple of days.

It seams to be really common. And dealers tend not to fix it in pre-sales preparation because that costs them money. That is why they wait for you the customer to complain and then charge it through the warranty scheme and make money !

No need to remove drive shafts, but you do need to drop the prop shaft. It is not such a good lash-up under there as the old L320.

Just had my L494 RRS serviced today at exactly 3 years old so now out of warranty. Dealer found leaking rear diff and it will be fixed under warranty ( as I had booked it in prior to expiry). Only weeping so no sign on floor of oil. It seems it is a known problem from what I was told.

Thanks chaps.

Still...

Seems like a sore one for an out of warranty repair. Nearly £1k after all. 2022 P440e AB

Yes my was under warranty. Otherwise, I would have brought it away and done it myself. Smile

I have just spotted that you have a Plus 8. That is far more interesting!!!

Adam..
