Anyone with a Crystal Ball ?

I currently have a 2013/13 RRS Black Edition and am considering options to replace with a 2016/16 HSE Dynamic.

I am attempting to compare likely relative cost of ownership over the next 3 Years ie keep current RRS or replace with RRS2 as above.

Can anyone gaze into their crystal ball and suggest comparative rates of depreciation between the two options??

Any view on what discount level (if any) could be expected off the sticker price of a used HSE Dynamic (from a LR Dealer) - have seen a few priced around the £57- 60K mark?

Also I understand the RRS will receive updates for MY18 - any thoughts on whether this will impact used prices for 2016MY & 2017MY cars?

Any views or advice much appreciated!!

I paid 61k 11 months ago for a 2014 sdv6 AB,,I'm now getting offers around 48-49k in px for a new one,,your looking at 10k a year loss on a new one.Im guessing mine would have been about 80k new with the few extras it came with.

Rickshaw, I have been checking used trade in prices of Hse dynamics this week, LR seem to buy in at Cap clean values which show around £56k for a 1 year old car, £52k for a 2 year old & £48k for a 3 year old, this should give you some idea but getting these prices maybe a different story as when they are buying of you they try & rip you off for as little as possible!

I would try and deal this month as June is normally very slow & it's the end of a quarter, offer them £2k under screen price as a min this month no matter what it's up for & walk away they will be back to you that same day trying to deal!

Interesting, but note sure if £2k off deals are available.

I approached my local LR dealer yesterday - a guy I've had a bit of a dialogue with ahead of selling my M4 and I think he knows I'm serious. I'm planning to either buy a car this week, as I'm on a driving holiday next week, or leave it till I get back in which case there is no hurry, and possibly a new car. I'd asked what stock they had for a 2015 HSE Dynamic with less than 40k miles with my spec. After a few initial questions (and not finding anything) he went quiet.

I then found a higher mileage car in their stock under my budget. I ran it through WBAC and it came up at £10k less than their ticket price. I said to LR that it looked somewhat overpriced but that I would give it serious interest at £2k under the ticket price, even though I ought to be starting lower. He didn't think there was much margin in it for them because of the buy-in price and the money spent on prep (£2k!?) plus the warranty to be added and checked with his sales manager. £500 off was all they could offer plus a commitment to give the best PX on my car.

On that basis, it's not the car for me which he knows and there's been no phone call back yet! 2005 RRS First Edition Supercharged

Andy - after now seeing what you paid, the problem you have is you fell into the big trap where the LR used screen prices have such a massive spread. When I bought my RRS last November it has just turned 12mths old. From a screen price point of view it was at the very bottom of a ridiculous price range which had some identical cars at other dealers with a screen price of £8-10k more than mine! So somebody who bought at the top of the spread will now have £10k more of negative equity to factor in to the usual depreciation than I do.

Without wishing to rub salt into your wound, you paid £61k for a My15 2014 car 11 moths ago, I paid £62k for a MY16 2015 car 8 months ago. A years difference may not seem a lot, but the RRS went through two significant MY updates on the SDV6 in that time. MY15.5 (March 2015) saw the introduction of the significantly better 306hp engine, which has lower tax, more hp, more torque and much better MPG. MY16 (Sep 2015) on top of the new 306hp engine thy also made standard the All Terrain Progression Control, Auto Access Height, Hands Free gesture tailgate and Wifi. Plus the Software Interface update for the ICE system..

Looking online now, 2014 ABs are retailing from £50k, so with all due respect I think the trade quotes of late £40's you are getting now are fairly inline with what the market dictates at this time of year, it's just you paid more for yours in the first place, so sadly the hit is harder.

OP - with your £55-60k budge, I would suggest the smart money is on a MY16 AB at sub £60k, for which there are several on the market right now. These cars retailed for close to £80k new, and if you can find one with some expensive options like I did, list was well over £80k so it'll hold its value better than an HSE.

To put it into context, my car has a GFV from LR of £45k when it reaches 4 years old (in September 2019). SOLD - MY16 SDV6 Autobiography Dynamic - Fire Engine Red, Fixed contrast pan roof, TV, Dual Screen, 5+2, Privacy, Noble paddles.

I understand what your saying Kmpowell but at the time I was looking for one they were all similar priced,I could have bought private for a couple of k less but when buying a car like this I always buy from dealer with the 2 years approved warranty & roadside assist.All the RRS range seem to have dropped in price in the last 8 month,,if I could have seen that coming I would have waited but I don't have the crystal ball.

Good advice from Kmpowell, it's just what I've been saying & tyre fitter is also right, I started researching used prices last summer before I took the plunge from Bmw, granted I was mainly looking at the prices of the first used rrs2's, which for an AB were easily retailing at around £58-60k for a 3 year old with around £30k miles, Hse dynamics slightly less. The used prices certainly have slid a lot due to double the number of rrs2's now on the Lr approved system, 600 this time last year now around 1200, what also does not help is greedy dealers seem to be wanting £7k plus across every bonnet, where as a friend of mine traded his 13plate AB rrs2's just over a year ago got £55k & it ended up with a window price of £59k and sold right away.

I think I will keep mine until its nearly 3 years old in 2 years time & trade it in against a 6month to 1 year old AB to my spec & at the bottom of the price spread & hopefully work an acceptable deal.

I moved over from Bmw exactly because of this issue with their cars, I knew I would pay more out for the RRS but thought it would hold its money better if the cars were the right spec with the must have extras. I really like the car & enjoy driving it so I will stick with them but I won't change as often as I thought I could have.

Mine was just over 2 years old when I bought it so at 61k it wasn't a bad price at the time.Like you say the dealers have plenty of RRS2's on their sites so prices are dropping like mad.

I have a 2012 RRS and looking at swapping for RRS2. Oldest RRS2 without stupid miles around £50k now, semi decent spec, and my dealer predicts that dropping another £10k over the next 12 months, due to better tech coming soon on RRS2 and also people switching to Velar. 2012 RRS SDV6

Thanks for all the comments. I can't help but feel that used RRS2's are a bit overpriced at the moment(as are new ones for that matter!!). Maybe the 2018MY and Velar will result in an adjustment to the older RRS2 prices?

On the other end of the scale my 2013 Black Edition does not seem to be worth as much as it should be (or I would like it to be!!!)

So aside from maybe tying up some more cash in a car my financial decision has to be based on TOTAL cost of ownership comparisons between RRS1 and RRS2 for example increased Maintenance costs , Warranty, Tax, Depreciation on my Black Edition against included warranty, included service plan, lower tax, less maintenance costs, & depreciation for a RRS2 (if that makes sense!)

In a few weeks dealers will be wanting to clear their forecourts for the cars coming in as part exchanges at the change of registration in September and then the arrival of Velar will stick a spanner in the works too, used prices will fall further and then after the new reg starts demand for a good winter car will rise and prices of used ones will firm up.............. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

If anything I can see the facelift RRS making residuals stronger. Look at the silly price of a new Velar (which is just a glorified F-Pace in a frock), and they are going to have to increase the RRS price so it's a) distanced away from the Velar, and b) to keep the premium model in-between the Velar and FFRR.

I still look at my GFV as an indicator of where prices are going. In Sep 2019 when my car hits 4yrs old it is going to be worth £45k. That's what Land Rover have stated, and if it drops badly I simply hand it back, which they cannot afford to do. Just think how many RRS's will get handed back without penalty if they do suddenly drop!

As said, I still think a bottom of the price band MY16 AB is your best bet. This for example: http://www.usedvehicles.landrover.co.uk/details/2757340

I think the option of just handing the keys back at the end of the PCP is something most folks wouldn't contemplate as they would also loose any equity that they had put into the car in the form of a deposit to reduce the amount borrowed.
