2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Cairns Blue



This is my wheel from a D4. The received wisdom is to get one without the white horn symbols on the switch packs, for earlier models, so that the control module for the heating element is compatible. As you can see mine has the white horn symbol yet has the earlier type module. I contacted the seller who was quite happy to take the wheel back if it didn't work. The image he'd used on the listing was one of his stock images and not the actual item!

As I've said, there is a whole host of info on this topic (and other stuff relevant to the RRS) on the Disco3.co.uk forum. Especially if you want to mod your vehicle. They seem to be more given to modding over there Cool

Another issue I see with using a complete D4 wheel is also finding one with the correct switch packs, as you car is a MY13 I would imagine it has the noble trim on the c/control, phone buttons etc. also the horn push buttons as well. Not all discos had them if any but sure someone else can answer that. In addition if you have ACC you would need a wheel with that pack as well. You could use your original switch pack for that but unless the Disco wheel had the noble they would not match cosmetically and that would annoy the hell out of me personally.

I'm certainly not trying to tell you what to do, but from a personal perspective I would buy new as all you need is bare wheel which comes with heating ecu. and a r/h switch pack plus possibly a clockspring which you may have to buy whether you use a disco or sport wheel. L/R parts list says after a specific vin no. they all had the heated clockspring fitted but that is not the case so just pot luck if it is or not. The other option is keep looking for a complete wheel from MY12/MY13 Autobiography as I think all A/Bs had heated wheels as standard and should be a straight swap.

I am quickly learning that you are both a fountain of knowledge and provide very sound advice with a similar outlook to me Bow down
If the finish did not match it would annoy the hell out of me too!
I think that my plan will be to look for a MY12/13 RRS L320 Autobiography Wheel as you suggested to ensure compatibility and if one does not turn up by the UK Autumn, I will bite the bullet and order a new wheel and switch pack.

Yes it does but it is negligible, but saying that even the leather part only gets warm not what could be described as hot might be because the wheel is quite chunky or slightly faulty not sure, can't even remember how hot original wheel got. Don't really need it down here middle of winter and has been 18 degrees last couple of days. Cool

I agree, the forum has saved me a lot of heartache trying all the combinations of wheels, switch packs and Clockrings Thumbs Up

Forums are great for this sort of thing. There is normally someone out there who has done what you are trying to do.

I owned a Mercedes and 2 main dealers said that modifying the Fibre Optic Ring could not be done, one post on the Mercedes Owner's Forum and I had it sorted with full instructions and photos Thumbs Up

The IIDtool *should* enable the heated steering wheel as I have seen the option while perusing the app. As for the airbag, I would guess that simply connecting it back up will enable it after a hard reset.

Thanks CANROVER for your input Thumbs Up . I plan to fit the wheel and new clock ring and do a hard reset. If the new heated steering wheel is not recognised, I will seek an independent specialist to enable the heated steering wheel option.

Hi all,

I know I'm looking at an older thread and am hoping the original posters are still about or maybe someone else can help?

I am wondering what iiD tool people are using to activate (if required) the heated steering wheel? I am looking to get this upgrade on my 2012 RRS. I have pored over this thread and think I have all I need (I've even bought a new clockspring before checking if mine has the extra terminal required!!).

I also going to get remote heating added, (parts and fitting instructions also found here so thanks for that), so would like to know if I can activate remote and timed heating with the same iiD tool?

I know the iiD tools are expensive to buy but I think I can save money in the long term by being able to a) activate features myself - local indy wants £50 per feature, and b) being able to diagnose faults which I can then repair, if not too difficult, and clear myself.

Hi Cymru001,

When I retro fitted my heated steering wheel and reconnected the battery it was instantly recognised with no need to change any configuration files using a IID tool.

I also retro fitted the remote heater system and this did need to be initialised using a GAP IID Bluetooth tool. A great piece of kit but not cheap. If you are planning to keep your RRS for a long time, the GAP IID tool is a great investment and I would highly recommend it.

Thanks for the quick reply. Did you have the correct clockspring or did you have to swap it out? I'm wondering if the car has the correct clockspring then all is good or an initialisation is required if the spring is changed?

No, I had to change the clock-spring, you will be very lucky if you already have the heated steering wheel clock-spring fitted. But even with changing the clock-spring, I still did not need a IID tool. Just plug n play for me Thumbs Up
