Will the UK ban diesels any time soon?

With all the clean air push and the anti-diesel sentiment, do you guys feel there's any risk to diesel engine cars being banned from say London or congested areas, or perhaps for the govt to take serious measures to discourage people from owning diesel cars.

I ask because I'm considering buying a new diesel RRS and I'm concerned!

In short..........no.

However, older (pre Euro 4 or 5) diesels will almost certainly get banned from pollution hot spots like many city centres.

Cars complying with Euro 6 will be fine. Even after Brexit............... MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

I can't see it but you never really know. Politically a new government with a large majority will want to enact any unpopular legislation early on so, if anything, I would expect some announcements that are designed to let market forces do the damage?

The motor industry, as ever, will be its own worst enemy and take the bait.

The most likely cause of a decline in diesel usage would be people believing all the hype, then it'll become a self-fulfilling prophecy. In my view, it will blow over if left alone - we'll probably see the last diesel car on the same day we all die of ebola, zica virus, cryptosporidium difficile, bird flu, sars.........

Mine was built on 19 March 2015, is a 306HP Dynamic and doesn't have Adblue so they were still being built and registered up to the end of March 2015. The really weird thing is my 1996 300 TDi Defender has lower emissions than my RRS yet is banned from entering the London Low emissions Zone............ purely because of its age. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Looks like Adblue was mandatory from September 2015, but there's a massive grey area in between Jan-Sep...

The official line:

From 1st January 2015, all newly introduced vehicles must meet Euro 6 standards. This includes any new models on the market. Vehicles already on sale must comply with Euro 6 by 1st September 2015, but;
Individual vehicles already on sale that were built by, and dispatched from, the manufacturer before 1st June 2015 can continue to be sold until 1st September 2016. However, the manufacturer must apply for derogation in these instances.
SOLD - MY16 SDV6 Autobiography Dynamic - Fire Engine Red, Fixed contrast pan roof, TV, Dual Screen, 5+2, Privacy, Noble paddles.

This issue was on my radar but I didn't think twice about ordering an SDV8 (Euro 6) this week. Is Andy Burnham - Manchester's new Mayor - really going to slap me with a charge for driving into his city each day. Er, no! Wouldn't exactly be a crowd pleaser would it, and I'm assuming he wants to keep the public on-side. And how would he enforce it - he doesn't have cameras already installed like they do in London for congestion charging.

London may be a 'special' case IMO. They have bigger congestion and polution issues, and there are more public transport options, so perhaps they could get away with it?

Medium to long term, I can see change. But first, I believe we will have a central government sponsored scrappage scheme to get the dirty diesels off the streets. 5 years to implement and run such a scheme I'd guess.

Just my view; nothing guaranteed! Current: Cayenne GTS (got fed up with waiting for LR to build my third RRS)
On order: RRS3 510e AB
Gone: RRS SDV8 AB, RRS SDV6, Vauxhall Nova 1.0, Nova 1.3 SR, Nova 1.4 SRi, Renault Laguna (why?), BMW 318is coupe (fabulous - despite having to buy a radio and tape player for it from Halfords), 323i saloon, 325ti compact (superb), 320td compact (awful), VW Golf 2.0d 4Motion (all the car you really need), BMW 120d compact (excellent), 118d compact (slow), 335d coupe (rapid)

Scrappage scheme? Do you think the Govt will give me £25k to step out of my 10 year old TDV8 and in to a "clean" later model? Nope, neither do I. Any scrappage scheme will be so limited as to be ineffective, in my opinion. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

If I recall correctly, the last scrappage scheme was a contribution of £1,000 or £2,000, which presumably you'd only take if your car was ready for the scrap heap in the first place.

(Incidentally, the very word 'scrappage' annoys me - why do people keep inventing new words to replace existing - usually shorter - ones? What's wrong with 'scrap'?)

But the Low Emissions Zone is all about particulate emissions. Your Euro 5 RRS has a DPF on it meaning that the particulate emissions will be comparable with a petrol car, probably better actually. (Less than 0.005 grammes/km on the official test). The old Defender has no DPF and fairly high particulate emissions as a result. The LEZ would require it to have Euro 3 levels of particulate emissions. (0.1 grammes/km). So you can see that particulate emissions from a Euro 5 or 6 are a fraction of that from earlier types. CO2 emissions have nothing to do with it.

That said, the moves to ban diesels are based on emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), as that contributes to airborne concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which directly effects human health. Euro 5 was a bit of a disaster for NOx emissions, because the legislation and testing was poorly defined. Euro 6, once the on-highway verification testing becomes part of type approval, in 2019, will be very effective in reducing NOx from diesels. It has worked brilliantly for HGVs, buses etc, which now emit less NOx than passenger cars in some cases.

A diesel car typically emits ten times as much NOx as a petrol car. That is a function of the 'lean-burn' characteristics of a diesel, that lead to good fuel efficiency, but leaves unburnt oxygen in the exhaust, which oxidises the nitrogen present in the atmospheric air.

By the way, London is not seeking to ban diesels, but is going to charge pre-Euro 6 diesels (roughly 4 years old at time of implementation). A ban is not a positive way to proceed. Scrappage schemes are artificial and poor value for money.
