Rear Pinion Seal Failure

Noticed a couple of drops of oil on the drive over last couple of weeks. Thought it was a mates old Landy that visits on our drive, and couldn't possibly be my 3yr old RRS!
Noticed it again today so got under the mota and low and behold fresh oil at the bottom of the rear diff. Sad

Trip to dealers quickly confirmed the rear pinion seal had worn/failed. He said it would be a big job dropping the rear suspension and getting the box out!! Shocked

I thought I was out of warranty by just a month, so was getting ready for a battle, but they said I had extended warranty until Feb 2018.....PHEW Whistle Massive relief.

So its all booked in for a couple of weeks time (need courtesy car) but was wondering, this seems a bit worrying on such a young car? Its a 2014 RRS HSE 3.0V6 with 40k miles.

Anyone aware of a problem or had similar?

Many thanks

Had my diff changed at about 6 months old, same issue. Also cured a driveline vibe I had at the time, the two may have been related. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Thanks Wilf,

That's interesting. When I first got the car I had a couple of drives with the technician to locate a vibration. Never found anything and I am not sure that it went away or I got use to it.

Will point them to that when I take it in, and they can look closely at it, just in case it's the cause of this problem.

Cheers

Easily damaged when being fitted to the car. Just bought a RRS 06 MY HSE TDV6 136,000 miles, to be a second car to my bland, boring Mitsubishi Outlander 68 plate 2.0 petrol 4

My car goes into the dealer for a leaking pinion seal on the rear diff tomorrow. There is no noise or vibration, just a leaking seal, which is not great at 20,000 miles and three years old.

While I was under there, I was not impressed to find the battery of electrical jack plugs arranged in all the weather behind the rear axle line.

Hi G-man,

Yes, it was bought through them so took it back to them in the first instance.

To my surprise they said I have an extended warranty until Feb 2018 ... thought my 2yr one ran out in Mar this year so that was a pleasant surprise!!

Goes in on 11th so will see what happens. I am aware they don't have the best reputation but they have been good with me.

Interesting when I took my car in for last service, month's ago, I asked would they check the seal. The tech said that they always did as they were known to fail. Basically if there is oil seepage they replace. So I think as self check before a dealer visit would be worthwhile and could save some dollars if the vehicle is out of warranty.Seepage may not get to a drop of oil on the floor for some time, M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.
