Anybody for a Lake District weekend with some Greenlaning

I'm starting to plan things for my leave in the Spring. Elsewhere on the boards Envoy and I have mentioned the possibility of a weekend meet-up with
some offroading/ greenlaning in the Lakes, would anybody else be interested?

I took my Defender over the Gatecarth Pass a couple of years back and that would be a no-no for most RRS owners, however there are numerous other routes that are less controlled than that! Unfortunately due to over-use many of the really good routes have had to be closed but there are some eminently "shiney" RRS suitable routes.
Accommodation is plentiful and there are numerous caravan/campsite and certified locations for those with caravans and tents. There are plenty of good B&B's and small hotels too. This event might not appeal to those down in the deep south or really far north, but anybody living between Birmingham and Dundee should find the drive there (about 2-3 hours) easy on a Friday evening.

BTW D3 & Freelander2 owners would be welcome to join us too. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Not yet, haven't really thought about it as I don't know exactly when I will be flying back from Hong Kong in March/April. Should know in the next 10 days or so though. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

If you have a Defender then bring it along instead - there are folks on here who are interested in buying one so we can show them what a PROPER hard working 4x4, not one of these luxo limo 4X4's, can do! Laughing I would rather bash my Def than have to drive home in a bashed RRS! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

How would the first weekend of May do - there is a bank holiday on the 6th and it would give us a "full" weekend to explore the place, and I SHOULD be back by then. Thoughts please! Weather should be better too. The only fly in the ointment would be if there was a lot of interest - then we would have to split into 2 groups to keep the impact down. Like 2 or 3 groups of 5-6 cars max.
Will post some pics of why Gatescarth would not be a good place for an RRS! and some views of places that would be great for one this evening.[/img] 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Picturse from my last weekend out down there.

The Old Coach Road in the north Lakes - dead easy even in an RRS!

The Gatescarth - a no-no in an RRS unless you don't mind bashed sills/doors

tight bends with rocks on one side and a sheer drop on the other!

Coming down on the Haweswater side

Try saving this pic and then zooming in on it to spot the Landies coming down on the north side of the pass................... there are 3 of them in there somewhere!

This set of hairpins is the overview of the pics further up the page

Gatescarth can only be driven with permission of the Lake District National Park Authority and is limited to 8 4x4's (and there are other conditions like no extreme Mud tyres and one way travel only) so I wouldn't consider taking a bunch of RRS's over it, we will stick to the gentler routes and also for those interested there are quite a few fords in the Lakes which are great fun to locate and drive. I have just been sent the following link to the LDNPA website by a friend who knows the area well.................. puts you in the picture about what we are up against trying to get offroad in the area.http://www.lake-district.gov.uk/index/enjo..._roads.htm

Smarticus, you know anything about the changes to the status of the routes in the Lakes? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim, hope you had a bonny hogmanay.

I have just returned from 10 days in The Lakes and did a bit of laning in the D3, and a lot more on bikes. Afraid the grief you get from walkers on most of the lanes now is so unpleasant that I rarely use them, and if I do it tends to be early morning or late eveing, when the walkers are absent but there is still some light. I would also avoid any more than 3 vehicles at a time.

As a suggestion, there are still some good routes (challenging and scenic but not usually damaging) around Alston (about 30 minutes from Penrith up perhaps the best driver's road in Britain - aka The Hartside Pass). Any weekend greenlaning in The Lakes would, I suggest, do well to spend a day around Grisedale, Hodge Close, Elterwater and the next day up around Alston. Certainly if you were choosing a busy bank holiday weekend, I'd be tempted tp spend both days around Alston as there are far far fewer walkers on those routes.

I'd certainly join in on an Alston day (and can offer accommodation here to anyone interested) as we live about 40 minutes from Alston. Razz RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

Why not shout at the walkers first before they can shout out you. Tell them would they dream of walking in the middle of the M25 and if not why are they walking in the middle of a public right of way! Hate walkers, never do it my self! 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
