A traditional Defender style off-roader to come.........

But not from Land Rover, the Chairman of the oil/ chemicals giant Ineos was interviewed on Radio 4's Today program this morning about his plans to set up a new factory to produce "traditional" style ladder chassis off-roaders in the NE of England for the UK and export markets.............. In the interview he claimed that Land Rover has been kept advised of the plans, but it will not be based on the Defender. Bet Land Rover will be rushing now to complete and launch their Defender replacement out a bit sooner than the 2020 that is now the projected launch date.
Radio 4 seems to be digging up old news as this was being hyped in the LR magazines in July last year. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Bet LR are unhappy with that. The new defender is obviously going to be a bodykitted up softroader on the disco sport platform that is indistinguishable from all their other indistinguishable vehicles, having an actual defender that's reliable would throw a spanner into their marketing.

If you want a new "real" leaf sprung "Defender" then Santana's are still being built and they have given LR a huge headache as they look like a Defender 110................ although these days they seem to be imported in tiny numbers 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Why do think the new Defender will be a soft roader? The big vehicles are all excellent off road and LR have stated that the new Defender will be better still. It'll be based on the aluminium chassis system used by FFRR, RRS and D5. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Cost, LR have to be able to make the defender more cheaply than the old model, it won't be priced as high as the big models, therefore they will base it on the DS/evoque platform.

Not according to LR:

Quote:
Crucially, Speth confirmed in Paris that the new Defender would be based on the aluminium architecture of the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery, meaning it can share the all-aluminium body shop and final assembly procedures of these models. However, Speth also confirmed that the Defender’s structure would need “a lot of different elements” to deliver the extremes of strength and durability customers will expect of Land Rover’s most capable off-roader.

It also has to be able to stretch out to Long Wheel Base for many commercial applications and there's no way an Evoque floor plan can be stretched that much and retain its strength. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
