Replace 1 or two?

I have run almost 15,000 miles on my 22" Conti's and today at service time the dealership swapped the rears side for side and found the sidewall of one has a slash in it that is quite deep. I reckon I may have been driving on this tyre for >18 months with the slash. The wear is even on the two tyres and they have loads of tread left but if I replace the slashed one do I also have to replace the other - undamaged - one with 15,000 miles of wear on them to avoid problems with the transmission/ 4WD system? Dealership offered me one replacement at £335 fitted which seems not bad for a Conti seeing as I paid Budget £320 for a 20" Conti Cross contact 6 years ago (the last time I had to buy a new tyre!). They were surprised that the brake pads are only 20% worn after 2 years/ 15000 miles - I'm not as I tend to drive at sensible speeds with a decent gap between me and the car in front and rarely in town where more brake applications are often needed. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I replaced a rear Pirelli with a puncture for a new one. I don't know how many miles the old rears had done but you can see a marked difference in the wear between the new and the old just by looking. I've had no issues with the difference in tread depth between the two rears so I think you'd be really unlucky to pick up an issue.
Fit one and if you get a problem, fit a new other Thumbs Up Robin

Might as well try just the one, should be fine being the same tyre and you'd hope a premium tyre would have relatively tight tolerance control from batch to batch.

Or another option would be look on eBay for a similar worn same brand tyre so your not always having to replace one side at a time?

So, is another option to look for a full size wheel (here or on ebay) to use as a spare - if it will fit Question Then see if you can flog the space saver and tyre.

Unless of course you are wedded to the space saver... Robin

I'm happy to have the space saver, it will work on front or rear and this is the first car I have had in 6 years that has had a spare of any kind, the cars in between have had a 'repair' kit. Also with the running wheel/tyres being 22" I'm not sure that a full size spare will fit in the well. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Spent a morning touring the local tyre specialists and every one of them except one came up with the same comments -
A) Which Continental Cross Contact is it as there are two versions - "standard" or "silent" - interestingly not one of the outlets knew how to tell the difference and all came out to look at the damaged tyre. I was quoted same price for both versions.......

B) 3 out of 4 said - cut hasn't exposed the carcass of the tyre (I assume that they mean the canvas or steel of the internal construction) so we don't believe you need to buy a new tyre.

C) Your tyres look brand new, how old are they? ............. then they scratch their head and say, never seem them that good after 15000 miles mate, usually Contis wear badly on Range Rovers, even your front ones are in good condition. I tell them it must be the gentle driving that does it, or maybe the off-road use Laughing

D) The one who said I needed to replace the tyre is one of the nation wide chains - the one that claims to have the Kwikest Fitters..........

I visited a one local small company, ATS, Budget Tyres (owned by Kwik Fit I believe) and Kwik Fit

So basis 3 out of 4 opinions I will not change the tyre! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
