England
Four-year MOT exemption for new cars proposed

Quote:
The time new cars are allowed on Britain's roads before requiring an MOT could rise from three to four years, under government proposals.

The period before the annual safety check is needed could change in 2018 after a public consultation.

We get cars in for 1st mot now at 3 yr old & they need tyres & new brakes & the customers moan & say the cars only 3 yr old,,,,but it's done 40,000miles,,the accident rate will go up if this does happen.

Spain

In Spain the first MOT (called ITV in Spain) is when the vehicle is 4 years old, then every 2 years until it's 10 years old, then it's every year. In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

Maybe it should be an optional sort of thing - MOT at year 4 and then every other year to 10years then annually PROVIDED you can prove that the car has been maintained and serviced as per manufacturer's recommendation at a manufacturer's approved service out let? If you don't like that then the car must have annual MOTs after year 3. Or should it be based on a mileage system so higher mileage vehicles get more frequent MOT's? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I'd leave as is, too. No obvious benefit from the change. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

As Andy says 3 years can already be a bit too long in certain cases. Most drivers will not bother getting their cars checked out before the first MoT is due at 4 years which will be unsafe. We all know what most dealers' complimentary "health checks" are like when a car goes in for a service etc. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

I think the MOT should be mandatory from 18 months old but extend the expiry to be 18 months instead of 12, with no extensions (i.e. it just lasts 18 months max from date of test). Or perhaps enable garages to only offer 12 month MOT not 18 month if the car has certain advisories. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso
RRS TDV6 HSE Lux (MY2011)... Nara Bronze / Arabica - now gone!

New South Wales a new car is exempt an annual inspection for the first 5 years from new. I have not noticed any
reasonably newish cars looking like bombs due to the annual inspection being pushed out Another Pommie Bar Steward down under
