DIY Key Fob Refurb/Repair

My old key fob (2005 rrs) was looking a bit shabby and the battery was playing up a bit so I thought it was about time for a fob service. Case and battery sourced off ebay for £10, some fobs have the land rover logo on third button others are a plane button at the bottom. This one was a £5 case fob and came delivered with some black tape stuck over the LR logo to get around trade marks I guess.

Having watched hard core butchery on youtube of people trying to get into their keb fobs with screw drivers/jigsaws etc. I wanted to share my approach that worked really well for me and hope it saves other people some time Thumbs Up

The trick was to just run a soldering iron around perimeter and then a gentle prise open with a screw driver and open she pops Smile The soldering iron cuts through the case like butter so breaking the case in half took about 10 mins tops.

Transfer the circuit board and the ignition key blade over to the new unit.
If replacing the battery you need to release the battery from the circuit board, its held in place with a couple of solder tabs.

Really pleased with how simple it was, advise wearing some gloves. Slips with the iron are easy done as I found out the hard way shortly followed by some expletives.

Other people advise gluing new fob back together, it seemed to click back firmly so will be keeping eye out on that one.

I like the soldering iron idea, I spent hours when I tried to do mime on my old RR. Sure this will help out lots of people.

Originally I was going to dremmel wheel a round it. But when I was ferreting trying to find it the soldering iron idea sort of fell into my hands. Bonus on the iron (no field testing proof) is it is mildly forgiving, if you slip with a screw driver chances your gonna damage the circuit board, dremmel wheel or jigsaws the carnage to the circuit board is not worth thinking about Shocked
