EGR value issue

Hi all, had the dreaded red triangle with 'Restricted performance' on readout so RAC diagnosed PO489 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Circuit Low. It's the TDV8. I will get it sorted asap but the garage is full for a week...the performance isn't any less yet, but what are the chances she goes into limp mode in the next week? Sad

hi Tim

does it still go ok then? did they clear the fault? just interested as my tdv6 has come up with same code. I cleared it but it was flat as a f$*rt so I blanked them both and so far no light

Hi Nick, the RAC just read the codes. Apparently they aren't allowed to clear them off as its to do with emissions which need to be dealt with. You can blank your TDV6 but TDV8 not possible I understand. The vehicle is performing exactly as normal...famous last words...just hoping I don't go into restricted mode before Monday when its in the menders Confused

If you thinking of replacing egr valves I would seriously consider doing both at the same time. I made this mistake last year only replacing one,,, 3 months later the other valve failed,, cheaper in the long run doing both at once. 2010 RRS, TDV8

Thanks gogsy will do. I'm in the garage tomorrow so they will re-read the fault....but there are now no warning lights showing! The red triangle was there for 3 days followed by the amber engine icon. Now nothing for 3 days. What you reckon?

07 onwards TDV6 can be blanked but also needs the ECU fooled into thinking they haven't.....Bodsy is your man for the whole job Thumbs Up Visitor from fullfatrr.com

Update - managed to get recovered home and now it's on the drive ready for spanners . Big thanks to Bodsy for his help last night . Nowt to do with egr issue , the battery went to zero in no time so it seems to be alternator . I stuck an old battery on last night to get it on the drive and it was eating that at a rate of knots so disconnected quickly .

Thumbs Up

Hi Timf, my car was undrivable when the egr valves failed,, when the first one failed it would still drive ok maybe because the engine was at running temperature but when I tried it the next day it produced clouds of whitish smoke and wouldn't accelerate at all, had to get it trailered to the indie. Exactly the same happened the second time, strange yours is still driving ok after a few days. Maybe it's a sign of things starting to go wrong, hopefully your garage can check the valves over properly 2010 RRS, TDV8

Thanks Gogsy. Just spoken to the garage. They did the diagnostic today and although EGR and DPF show up (in some way, dont ask me how) it seems okay. They aren't JLR but are a recognised good garage used to dealing with JLR vehicles (all a lot newer than mine). They think I've been doing too many low rev short runs, which is probably true so the aim over the next day or two is use paddle shift to keep the revs up. Will report any other issue and interesting that yours didn't go at all when the EGR's failed. I don't want to commission any 'pre-emptive' work as the warranty won't pay out, and on a TDV8 its quite a job as the valves are a long way in...

Picked the car up and all seems well. Real reason for reporting is to say they put a glug of Techron in the fuel tank. Reading the flysheet on the stuff it seems its an approved additive for cleaning up the injectors etc.. of deposits. Let's see Thumbs Up
