Am I losing the plot?

Can't believe I'm even considering this but after 16 years/10 JLR vehicles I'm thinking of being unfaithful and buying a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Shocked

Been offered £8800 discount off a brand new all singing and dancing PHEV with 5 years warranty (8 year batteries), a decent price for my 8 months old DS (so basically a straight swap), no road tax and £10 pm electric/£10 pm petrol (compared to £115 pm diesel currently) Mr. Green

If I do this I hope to buy an f-type for summer/weekend fun and use the phev for winter/commuting Cool

It's not a RRS I know but neither is the DS and I'd rather have an f-type and SUV for the same money Wink

Anyone want a faultless DS without the wait and dealer profit Whistle Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Have you only just realised Muddy?

With those stats, it's hard to ignore. Shocked
Have you taken one for an extended test drive?
I do see quite a few of them on the road these days, so very popular. Can't help you out deciding if they are any good though. Got to be worth a look at least. Thumbs Up

Don't forget that all cars currently exempt from car tax (hybrids)will have to pay between £140 - £240, unless purely 100% electric, which will still be allowed. Also all charging points are now set at £5.00 for 20 mins charge, only payable by card, now working out very expensive as currently they have all been free. There was quite an outcry, but to many people have been charging their vehicles at them was reason given, but they did put time for £5.00 up by 5 minutes to 20'. So much for being more green, evidently it will be more expensive to run by electric than the thirstiest sports car. Oh Joy. John

The rfl licence increase will only apply to vehicles registered after April 17 I think so best to buy before Confused

Note that all cars registered before 01 April 2017 will remain in the current VED system, which will not change. The new system only applies to cars registered from 01 April 2017

I will only charge at home for my trips usually 20-30 miles per day - weekend will be further but even if I use petrol on return leg should be cheaper than top up electric charges Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Hi Muddy

Unless you are really into parsimony, the PHEV will soon get very boring. I regularly get rental Outlanders when I travel on business, utterly soulless if totally reliable.

I have my much loved M3 (equivalent to your F Type) and I have a runaround Subaru Forester which I bought used. I like the Soob as a daily driver, it does everything just fine, but it's a bit, well, boring. No problem, it owes me nothing, it was a great buy for not much more than banger money. I could sell it for at least what I gave for it and buy something better and more fun but it's been so good, I don't want to part with it.

I try to convince myself that it's cheap motoring (not fuel wise but that's really nothing) as it never goes wrong, needs only routine servicing, brakes last forever, tyres last forever and it doesn't really depreciate. But frugality doesn't equal driving fun.

Sinking lots of money into a PHEV which will soon be boring may not be a good idea, F Type or not. I get the PHEV idea, it can be justified to Mrs Muddy as being cheap motoring but really, what will you do with the extra 80 quid a month? Spend it on petrol for the F type probably Laughing I too have spousal approval issues with having had so many cars although she gives up normally. Which reminds me, I have to own up to buying a nice little cheap CLK 320 convertible (just for for the summer you understand) which I haven't collected yet. It might be a tricky few days ahead.

Anyway, my tip is to get 2 cars that you enjoy driving. PHEV novelty will wear off and even though it's discounted, you will be bored and do your dough. Maybe another RRS is on the cards for you?

I've been guilty of getting bored with cars in the past before RRS ownership and it's happening now with DS Rolling Eyes

The Mitsubishi would be a commuting vehicle and snowmobile as I plan to buy a luxury toy for the weekend with the extra cash Twisted Evil Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

i ready elsewhere that someone got a good deal on a PHEV, looked them up after and they look ok, but no towing capacity which i wanted.

Big Discounts off new across the brand, leads to big loses at trade in, as the other chap i read said similar discount was offered to him too.

But £5 for a 20 min top is a rip off, will be cheaper to buy a generator and plug it in to that, and get a full charge for a fiver Laughing

If I was still towing wouldn't be considering this either

I'm thinking if I keep this 5 years which isn't impossible thanks to warranty the depreciation isn't a big problem and I've looked at used but not enough saving to pass up on a new deal Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Muddy
I blame you, test drove one this afternoon and tempted, it's definitely no RRS but the drive was smooth and comfortable and the 32 miles battery would easily get me round my 20 mile commute on battery power, engine doesn't kick in too 70mph.
Even better is I won't have to pay 500+ for road tax either Confused Nanocom Evo
