4.2 servicing (gearbox filter)

Hi guys

Iv done a bit of searching and seemed to be confused.

Car is a 4.2lt supercharger model.

In order to change the transmission filter does the engine have to be lifted in order for filter to be replaced or is this only for the diesel models?

Also does the 4.2 ltr need its fuel filter replacing every 2 years?

A lot of the servicing fluff I seem to be reading, seems to be for the TDV6 Confused '06 RRS Supercharged Cairns Blue

If you're going to do this sort of stuff yourself, wouldn't it be sensible to get a copy of the workshop manual? It's available for about a tenner on the bay. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Hi bud thanks for reply, I'm not doing the work myself, mate who owns a garage is, but I said I would buy the serving parts to do it (150k service), even thought I do work on my road cars, im just not fully familiar with the RR and dont have access to a ramp etc etc

Didn't even know the manual existed tbh....This forum has been very good for other stuff (brakes etc). '06 RRS Supercharged Cairns Blue

The metal sumps make it an easier job to replace. No need to undo mounts or exhaust.

I've had a problem with getting the gasket to reseal. Can't help but think you just change the fluid from the radiator but as yours is super high mileage worth changing the filter.

Try and get a metal sump with a drain plug.

Its actually only on 80k miles, but its 10 years old (2006) so is due its 10 year or 150k mile service.

Those metal sumps def look like they will save time and hassle, but like most after market things I am dubious so good o get a second opinion from owners who have done the "mod". '06 RRS Supercharged Cairns Blue

If it's only done 80k I would leave it alone and just change the fluid.
Will save you £85 and a load of hassle/labour.

Fluid is pumped out the front and remainder drained out the sump drain.

My filter didn't look too bad

Get the gearbox megaflushed at that mileage. Geoff on Disco3 is your man! Thumbs Up

Thanks guys, since posting this original thread I pretty much have my questions answered now.

I read on here that the front diff oil can be used in the transfer box too (Castrol 75-90) but have also read they cant be used...bit of conflict of information there...trouble is I already have the castrol oil on the shelf. '06 RRS Supercharged Cairns Blue

2 litres of castrol can be used for the front and rear diffs. How many litres on the shelf ?

Transfer case oil is different to the diff oil.

Front diff holds 750ml rear holds 1.2 litres.

Remember that the active rear diff uses different oil to the front diff/standard rear diff. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Thanks guys, just have a 3 liters of the Castrol Sytrax oil

Any pics of the active rear diff so I can check?

im guessing it would be something this with wires going into the top control box.
