Several posts here about chipping. Jeremy Clarkson's Sunday Times article this weekend makes an interesting read, and for someone that doesn't know any better, makes sense too.

a good read as always from Clarkson

as ever he misses many other factors in the equation such as manufacturers having to design cars that last 150000km before failure hence big safety factors

I have just red the article by Jeremy Clarkson and i have to agree with some of his points espically when it comes to weather the car is up to such a modification in performance, butyou must rember that all manufacturers have to do things in the interests of warranty and the life (the safety zone) of the product in mind ,not allways are things produced with the best way of operating in mind,Like the toaster that doesn't quite toast the bread enough and you have to put it back in again.
Its pretty much the same as the re mapping or chipping of modern cars.Take the RRS as an example, the vehicle is up to the extra hp, as the tdv6 is pretty much the same car as the 4.4v8 (with some exceptions)which does have more hp than the diesel. Remember that the increase in hp on the tdv6 is about 45hp after chipping. As for comments about just before you hit a tree, put any car in the wrong hands regardless of hp and it can be a leathol thing.
I have heard that there are some L/R dealers that are going to offer chipping.
If they were to fit all the products on to all cars then thy would have many after sales of goddies.

Clarkson is being simplistic (and not a little bit paternalistic) in his opinions. Why does WV not make the Polo with a 237 bhp engine? Well for one thing cost. As Clarkson correctly notes - there is more to a fast and safe car than just horse power. Another reason? Marketing. Who would buy the TT if the Polo had the same handling and power but at 8,000 GBP less?

No, I don't tinker with my toaster or my lawn tractor (but many in the U.S. do! Shocked ) - I do however tinker tremendously with my mountain bikes, with my computers, with my house and yes, with my cars. Who tinkers with washing machines? Guys like Dyson and we know what that gets them...

The point made about the RRS being designed to handle much more power is correct. This is also true of several other cars. As long as you understand the scope of changes a manufacturer makes across a model range then you can anticipate how the car will perform with more power and what will be needed in addition to raw engine performance to handle it.

Someone should shake the man up and say :

"Jeremy, you have a platform, people listen to you. Why don't you do something useful with it ?"

The continuing prowess of British engineering in aerospace and automotive (particularly in racing), and the (available) technology required to tackle carbon dioxide emissions are just two areas which need a powerful advocate in the media.
