Number Plate spacing

Hello Chaps,

Only a week to go before collection of my "new" 06 plate RRS......
My thoughts have turned towards private plates.
I have a great one on retention but it will need 1 character spaced a little , er , creativeley!

What can / do we get away with regarding plate spacing.
I know that the law take a dim view of distorting the characters but i want a legal font just a bit of
a creative space.
How many of us have "interesting" plate spacing?

Whats the worst that can happen?
Will I probably get away with it?
What's the plate??? M12 RTK which will read MART K

THanks Chaps

The worst that can happen is that the number is taken away from you and 3 points on your license. Most get away with it but all you need is some chief constable who needs to up his figures and you'll get done! 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

I do something similar. But i just keep the spacing between numbers and letters the same. Not so noticeable.

Actually, I need new plates made up. Any creative suppliers / reccomendations here? 2022 P440e AB

About 10 years ago I bought an Irish registration JOI 857 and had the plates made up JO 1857. I was stopped at the side of a busy motorway in heavy traffic (very dangerous for me and the policeman) and was given a sarcastic chat about "nice car (thanks), had it long (since new), then you must have falsified the number yourself (er - yes). He then said I had one of two options 1) go to court and the fine would be £1000 (eqivalent of £2000 now) or take a defective vehicle ticket. I took the later, changed the plate and had to take it to an MOT station for them to sign to say the defect had been corrected. The policeman said that if he saw me with the number moved again it would be straight to court. The MOT man intially refused to sign the defective vehicle ticket as he stated the letter 'I' was not used by the DVLA and therefore the plate should read JO 1857 (he had never come across an Irish reg before). Even when I managed to persuade him to sign he didn't believe it.

I sold JOI 857 for a profit and bought another registration and to this day display it illegally on my Morgan! Gone - 2008 TDV8, Stornoway Grey, ebony, zabrano trim, TV, Tasmods, mudflaps.

www.impactshowplates.co.uk are great use them all the time you can also make your plate up on the site to see what it will look like. Remebr to say that they are just for show though if they ask (leagal sh**).

As VA says they can take the plate off you but they normally give you a warning first.

I had an Irish plate on a previous car and got stopped by a policeman that was ignorant of them (and lots of other stuff too actually... AND he looked like Eddie the Eagle!) and he tried to hand me a defect notice. My plate was 100% legal, correct font and spacing and I suggested to him that he might want to refer to a colleague before writing it up. He did so and looked suitably sheepish. Obviously he then wanted to have a "better look" round the car to try and stick something on me - luckily everything was in order so he went away no doubt boiling inside.

My personal opinion is that it's not worth the hassle of being caught... Confused

Basically as mentioned you are simply drawing attention to yourself and liable to be done on the smallest of infringements. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

I have a colleague at work whose brother is a Detective Inspector at one of the nicks in the Birmingham area. He warned me earlier in the year that plod are going to start clamping down on illegal number plates.

I took the warning with the usual pinch of salt, but it looks as if he may be true to his words. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.

Reality check I think:

It would be nicer if plod spent more time doing something valuable rather than pulling you over to book you for a badly spaced number plate, but it IS illegal... so you can't complain any more about that than if you were clocked doing 90 on the motorway. I speed as much as (if not more than) the next man, but I can't get up in arms about being caught, can I? Confused
