First Service Shock - is this normal?

Hi folks,

Just had my first 'Service Pack' service (the cars second), and sure enough I had a phone call saying they spotted the rear brake pads were 75% worn. Thinking rear pads are fairly small and it didn't need discs I (stupidly) said sure go ahead as the rest of the service is no cost to me.

So you can imagine my shock when I picked up the bill for £289.76 Shocked Censored

I had a Jag XKR before so am used to main dealer service costs for powerful cars, but this nearly knocked me over!

My question is .. "is this normal" or is the cynical part of me think they are clawing back some of the costs from the free service??

Breakdown was:-
Brake pad kit £93.63
Brake wire kit. £19.34
Labour. £128.50

Dreaded VAT. £48.29
TOTAL. £289.76

My car is a 2014 SDV6 HSE with 28k miles.

If the brake warning light hadn't come on, you shouldn't need to change the warning sensor. Other than that, seems about right for LR main dealer costs. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

sounds extremely steep for the labour, but if you're going to get main dealer to do your dirty work, without asking the price, then expect the unexpected Mr. Green I did my own pads (2007 RRS) and not only was it enjoyable, it cost me about £50 incl. wear sensor. I do feel your pain though. Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.
DONE: Meduza front bumper, AB rear bumper, AB tailpipes, calipers repainted, rear upper tailgate upgrade, side steps, AB front grille, AB side vents, rear LED lights, clear side repeaters, integrated daytime running lights, LED headlights.
TO DO: color code sills and pillars.

I also came from an XKR (4.2) and I find the RRS dealer servicing similarly priced.

Main stealers are so sneaky. I mean they really are. I have never had an indy that does this sort of thing. And fortunately my car is old enough now (5 years) that I can easily justify using an independent.

I paid a ridiculous amount to have my brakes de-glazed by a dealer once. Never again. Oh, and when my indy said they needed de-glazing another time they did it for free (bundling it with some other work costing less than £100).

When I was still main dealer servicing, later in the car's life, I decided to get additional work including MOT from an indy but servicing only from the main dealer. It's inconvenient having two appointments, but makes more financial sense.

I would love to know how much having specialist independent service stamps FROM NEW knocks off the value of a car. When the sums are done it may even be cost neutral and significantly more pleasurable. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

Yes I know it was not savvy, and unlike me, but I just wanted to check what LR main stealer rates were.

I was just riding the 'free servicing tide' and got wiped out!!

6 pot pads are a lot more than the 4 pots Whistle Thumbs Up

Dealer price is around £260 for the pads, aftermarket stuff is around £90-100

So less than £100 for the after market pads and sensors, even for the 6 pots. The rest is labour and vat, typical dealer prices with the added fee for the government. DIY it and save yourself a few pounds for a beer or 2 Very Happy 2008 Supercharged Stornaway Grey, 22inch black Stormers

I hear what you are all saying and it makes sense, but I guess it's that usual problem of balance between value for money and keeping the warranty sweet. This is still quite a new car and as I got it from a main dealer, I got the 2yr full manufacturers warranty with it.

I bought it in March last year, so will stay with them until my time runs out next year. The fronts are 50% worn so may last another year. Thereafter I will use genuine parts but probably a good Indy garage to fit them. It's too big and expensive mota to take a risk.

It's the bloody '£120 per hour plus vat' bit that I need to keep to a minimum. The car has the 5yr Service Plan so I just need to make sure they do the minimum requirement to keep it free whenever it goes in Thumbs Up

I had the "squeaky brakes" syndrome - moaned so they replaced the pads for free at 12kmiles.

Up for sale on PH at the mo as its time to get out of JLR ownership....

Just have the servicing done at the main dealers. That will keep the warranty intact Have the rest done at Indie. How many miles had the brake pads done? My Fronts lasted 42K and backs were still good for another 10K Thumbs Up :thumbsup:You say in your first report its got 2 year Manufacturer Warranty. Then you say its got 5 year warranty? itisme
