bmw x5 or RRS what is best

i cant decide between a bmw e70 x5 or a RRS iv got about £13k to spend,

originally i was after a range rover as i think they look better and have a better image but the more i read about them both i think the bmw sounds like the better car ie more reliable.better mpg.faster better engine than the tdv6 2,7,

i have a e60 530d msport at the moment i love it but need more space,Head says get the x5 hart says get RRS

Has anybody had both and could help sway me towards the RRS.

I had a drive of a x5 and thought the steering was very heavy did anyone else think so

ive had a 2005 x5 and it seemed more powerfull than my rrs but the range rover drives miles better in my opinion
x5 scrubbed back tyres quick (not sure if this was just mine or they all do it)

I haven't owned an X5 but test drove one (3.5d I think) about 2 years ago. I had a 2009 RRS at the time which I was very happy with but was considering X5 and Q7 just for a change. Steering felt heavy and the salesman's explanation was this was to help keep the car straight under quick accelaration from standstill. He tried to tell me X5 was quieter than my Sport and didn't believe me when I disagreed after a short test drive with him up the M1 Rolling Eyes Wind and road noise was consiederably louder than RRS (which was older than the X5). X5 was definitely quicker but not by a huge amount to make it a deciding factor. However, I may not have pushed it hard enough.

I ended up with a 2013 RRS.

In all honesty, it is unlikely you will get an unbiased answer on a Range Rover Sport or an X5 forum. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

£13k isn't a big budget. Do you have budget for upkeep too? If not neither is likely to be great choice as both have issues that can bite. The RRS is more likely to be expensive to run too.

What are you planning to use the vehicle for? If towing or venturing off road then the RRS is the easy choice as it is excellent at both. If just commuting then buy the best you can for your budget. That's likely to mean the X5. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I've had a few of both, all bought at about same age, used more or less the same. Never had work done on the BMWs.

Sports have needed rear anti roll bar, alternator, battery and front suspension.

The Sport is nicer inside but the Touch screen is in the stone age compared to the I drive control.

If you have Turbo issues on an X5 you don't the body off. If you work on your cars yourself there is plenty of bits for a Beemer

An X5 can be a sensible choice and RRS is just an emotional roller coaster.

Probably won't buy another Sport as the QC at factory and dealerships is too poor and the hassle too great.

RRS is an offroad vehicle and works really well onroad but an X5 is onroad only.

Pretty straight forward really a RRS. 07MY RRS TDV6

not been on here for a while thanks for all the replys,

the car will mostly be used by the misses to ferry kids around and travel to work 3 times a week about 18 miles round trip i work away a lot but will be also using it when im home.

if i get the tdv6 2.7 i would get it remapped i still fancy the rrs sport even though the x5 is the sensible choice.

iv been looking again on auto trader and they is a few tdv8 in my budget but the are all high miles ie 120k-130k i think buying a rrs with that sort of miles on is asking for trouble what do you think avarage mileage tdv6 or high miles tdv8

V8. At least it does not destruct the engine all at once. Regards etc.,

That pretty much sums up how LRs are. The figures don't always add up, they often seem the worse choice...but you get in one and they just aren't! Very Happy

A high mileage TDV8 might be quite a good option if it happens to have had a new turbo or two and the gearbox has been looked after. Otherwise a lower mileage TDV6 is probably the safer bet. High milage on these cars isn't really a problem though, and can mean lots of stuff has been done. Thumbs Up

What sort of mileage will you/it be doing? If fairly low, have you considered a petrol model? The increased fuel is offset a little by a lower purchase cost, and they are, of course, immune to the turbo issues that can affect the diesels. Wink

we will not be doing many miles to be honest 10k a year maybe a little more or less but don't think i could handle 15mpg or what ever it is and they is not much difference in price between petrol and diesel models.

I quite like the face lift cayenne 2007 on wards

I found the X5 to be lifeless and boring both inside and out, like most BM's of recent years.

Instead I went for a Cayenne and had a few including a Turbo S, lovely cars if you can get past the exterior looks. Solidly built with quality interiors, good performance, terrible offroad and eat brakes. Also expensive if they go wrong so go to VW for any work needed instead of Porsche as the labour rates are half. 13k gets you a good Cayenne S these days just be aware of the poor MPG and upkeep costs.

I've preferred the RRS as the all rounder hence why I have one now, a well looked after one should have no more issues than any other car in theory.

Have you considered Volvo XC90's?
