Private Plate Retention

Just thought I would post this up in case anyone else is about to do the same...

Time has come to sell the RRS so I've just used the DVLA online site to remove my private plate, normally this takes about a week if I remember correctly, well not anymore!

You fill in the from, pay your fees, and that's it, you can instantly put your original plates back on.

Bit disappointed really as I would have waited until I had sold it and removed the plate at the same had I have know it would be so quick, now I have to drive round with the old plate on Sad

Does anyone know if it's as quick to assign it to a new vehicle using the new system? MY07 TDV6 HSE Stornaway & Ivory

I've just been through this process. The bad news is that you must wait for the new V5C on the new vehicle before you can put your personalised plates on. The good news is that you clearly have quite some leaway on how quickly you must take the plates off the car you are selling. If you dopn't already have the old/original plates then you need to get them made up. As you, theoretically, need a V5C to do that then they understand that you may have to continue running the personalised plates on the old car until the revised V5C (for old car on the non-personalised plates) arrives and you have had time to get new plates made.

So, here's the timescale AFAIK

1. Order retention cert online
2. Put old plates back on vehicle immediately, or up to a few days after the revised V5C arrives. This should give you about 7-10 days IMO.
3. Buy new car. Send off new purchaser's section of the V5C along with the retention cerificate (following the instructions on the back)
4. Wait about a week for new V5C to arrive and then put personalised plates on.

Don't forget you may need different sized plates according to what you have sold and will buy.

That's good to know - I am in the process of selling mine - it has a private plate on at the moment and don't want to change it on the chance it may not sell.

Thanks

I think there are some instances in which the car would be given a new registration, but they are very few and far between. The_big_1 is correct in saying it should revert to its original reg.

It SHOULD revert to its original reg, unless the DVLA have sold it since you took it off Rolling Eyes

The online system is so much better than the way it used to be done. It's taken 6 weeks before for me.

The lad I work with did his recently and got his V5 in 2 days and the retention certificate in 3. RRS is gone but I'm still hanging about on here.
