Hi guys.... Been Reading up a fair bit about 22s, and was just wondering what tyre size would be best for giving decent protection?

I know a few are running 265/35 but I'd be under the impression these would be quite 'low-profile'?
Working it out a 265/35 would have 92mm of rubber whereas a 285/35 would have nearly 100mm of rubber to protect the wheels.

So what are the options out there. Is anyone running a bigger profile in 22s (and do they have any pics?)

also, what can be fitted to a MY10 RRS? Is there a limit profile?

Finally, what would be a good tyre for 22s for probably a bit of 'soft roading' as um sure road tyres would end up getting stuck on a beach etc?

I would say with 22s get as much rubber as possible (without exceeding the maximum overall wheel/tyre size - which im not sure what it is).....

Regarding off roading (even soft) with 22s this would not be recommended.

As above I would not recommend 22" for anything but road use and 22" tyres are designed for road only.

I use 285/35/22 Toyo proxes as did I previously, no complaints

I did try a set of cooper avon and they failed under the weight and side walls cracked

Why would you not recommend 22s on soft (grass, sand etc) surfaces? Is it because the tyres will be road tyres?

As opposed to 285/35s my tyre guy has looked into 295/30s.

He says the 295s will have the same rolling diameter as the 285s but are a fair bit cheaper.

Can anyone see any problems with the change from a 285 to a 295?

...which helps me check if I fancy a change of rims or altering sizes for a "stretched" look on certain cars. Generally you dont want to exceed 2% difference to original if you can help it as even at 70mph the speedo would be no more than perhaps 2mph out from what it was. If you consider that a 285/35/22 is the "standard" tyre then you could drop down to a 265/40/22 and have virtually identical rolling radius and be well under 2% out and gain a good few mm in sidewall - 106mm in crude terms as you described earlier, this is more than both the 285 and 295/35/22 options.

Obviously having a slightly larger sidewall size will soften the ride a tad, ease the punishment the wheels have to put up with and perhaps help with tramlining a touch. Downsides to a higher profile, skinnier tyre would be less direct turn in, slightly vague steering, more tyre squeel and less ultimate grip. Personally I think these are all moot points as a 265/40/22 is already such an extreme tyre that you are kinda swimming uphill !!!

yes, I read about speedo showing different speed, but I'm more interested if they are going to fit arches without rubbing.

They would be 29mm (3,80%) higher than 285/35/22.

Reason for asking is I can have 285/40/22 in quite good price and could do with higher tyres due to comfort and less stress on wheels.

If this is for a RRS2 then 275 40. They are not a road tyres the Std Contis.
Not much else around in that size.

RRS 2007.
275/40/22 are 779mm, and 285/40/22 are 787mm. Just 8mm between them.
I guess it shouldnt be a problem

mine is on toyo's well worth paying extra for tyres, the cheepo budget ones fall apart well before wear is an issue

The only tyres that make sense on 22's are 285/35/22 for me. I'd guess lower profiles would compromise the suspension too much. I've already to replace all my bushes. So it's a no go to drop to 295/30/22 for me.

Toyo look great on 22's if that helps.
