Short Distances

Hi All, I have just recently changed jobs and now work 2 miles down the road from where I live. Will running my 2.7 TDV RRS that short distance cause any issues?

It'll never warm up and the battery won't get much of a charge either. Two miles is a nice walk... Whistle 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

That's one of the reasons I get rid of my TDV8. These cars need a decent run at temperature regularly. I work from home now so it would get much use at all other than the Sainsburys run……..and the 600 mile round trip to see our daughter at uni, once a term. FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy

I've been doing a short commute like that for 20 years in a variety of vehicles and never had a problem engine wise. At this time of year it can be brutal on your battery though and especially so in the sport with all the extra electrical gizmos. So long as you are prepared to make sure that the battery is topped up every couple of weeks I'd say you'll be fine. I've fitted a permanently attached CTEK 'comfort' charging cable to mine so I can quickly hook up the battery charger once a fortnight to top off the battery with minimum effort.

As zaphod says, keeping the battery topped up is ideal. I have an MXS25 so I can't use comfort leads but I intend to wire up some Anderson plugs. Wink

Cheers for the info. It will be a good excuse to the missus that I need to go out for a few hours at the weekend to run the motor.

Walking would have been an option but as I get a car allowance I need to have it in the car park

granted a different car, but my old Freelander TD4 Auto had no issue at all with its half mile drive to work on a morning over 5 years, serviced regularly by LR and does longer runs through the day and after work

Hi, mine does short trips all the while, but every 4-6 weeks it does an 80 mile round trip to our caravan, I believe this saves its life or certainly helps Thumbs Up 2007, HSE, Cairnes Blue, Factory tints, Love it !!!

I work less than a mile from home so my 2.7 does a lot of short trips. Once a week I'll take it out for a 15-20 mile hoon down the dual carriageway to clear the cobwebs.

I also use a trickle charger (around £40 from Halfords iirc) in the winter as the battery takes a pounding with all the heating and cold mornings. A long charge once a week will keep it healthy through the winter. LCFC. Receiver of threatening letters from Overfinch.

I need my car through the day, for visiting the properties, clients and odd sandwich run, it would be a bit of a PITA walking home each time I wanted the car, so i drive, but occasionally walk if im in the office all day and the weathers fine

One other thing to watch out for is the build up of condensation in the engine due to small trips where the engine hasn't time to reach tempreture, you can check under your oil cap for this, I've seen it happen on a 330bmw and an Alfa.

It will show as a white gunk if this appears its best getting an oil change, maybe in your case it's best to get the more expensive oil that protects right from the start up aswell Smile

Do you charge it with the battery connected and the car all locked and feed the charger wire through bonnet gap?
Will 6mm eyelet comfort lead work or does it need 8mm?
I'd like to top mine up once in a whilst parked overnight on the drive etc

Rob, do you have tow electrics? If so, you can charge through that plug using a CTek with adaptor. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
