Cold Calls

How do you deal with nuisance or cold calls?

Although I've registered with the TPS I seem to be getting more and more of these calls.

I've invested in a whistle.

My plan of attack will be to carry on with the call (just to make sure it's not work related) and then let rip with the whistle down the phone and then call my dogs name. I will then apologies and ask where we were at with the conversation.

My wife has asked me not to but I have asked not to be called Twisted Evil

What do you do?

Tell them you charge £5 a minute for listening to cold calls and would they please give you their head office details and an authorisation number for your invoice... ends calls quite quickly !

Many now hide their number so you cannot even block them if they call your mobile number. My employers HR depts are based overseas in Manila and Mumbai and their number always comes up as number witheld, they got very upset with me for not answering their calls........ so did many other UK and NW European staff but after we explained the situation with regard to nuisance calls now we can now see the number or their name comes up if in my contacts list - I still don't answer them and let them contact me by email...............

If the nuisance caller does stupidly have their number showing then whatever you do, do not call them back as frequently they are premium rate numbers charging huge per minute rates. What you can do though is use a search engine to find out who the number is registered to and then report them to OFCOM or their industry regulator. I did this with a Manchester based firm of ambulance chasing lawyers who were pesting me to make a PPI claim (I have never taken out PPI) - not only were they finded a huge a mount of money the Law Society took action against them and they are no longer touting for PPI claims. The company was trading as something like Red Star Trading Ltd, but it was a shell company for a firm of lawyers

Did anybody watch The Fraud Squad on ITV last evening? I have a suspiscion many of these PPI claims firms are acting just like those fraudsters were. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Think one of the latest things is the number that shows on your phone
Seems to be a local area failing code ....

Only thing is it still comes from a call centre but uses the local dailing code for where you are Shocked

Don't ask me how it works Confused But happened last week on my mobile , a missed call that looked to be local Question

Phoned it back from work and it seems I had a car accident in the last 3 years ! Censored

Thanks for all the great replies. I'll get shut of the whistle and invest in some of those BT Phones. Found this offer:

In Aust we have a "Do not Call Register" and this prevents Aust companies calling as the penalties are very high if companies are investigated. It works very well.

However it does not stop scammers calling from India saying they are from Microsoft and that I have issues with my computer that can be fixed for a fee, or claiming from various other companies - the Do Not Call Register is not much use if the callers are outside my Government's jurisdiction. Does bluff the scammers when I tell them they are being reported.
