Suspension Knock, Mass Dampers

My '08 3.6 HST is currently in for rear brakes and while it's there I have asked them to check the suspension for Knocking.

They have come back and said all the dampers are OK but some bushes need replacing. They can also fit some additional parts, MASS DAMPERS, which will stop the knock. They have said it is a chargable item at £179 as the warranty will not pay out as they were never fitted to the car in the first place and is a modification, they will pay for the bushes.

Has anyone else had this and is it correct?

Thank you Andrew

That's rubbish - my mass dampers were fitted under warranty earlier this year. It's a modification to sort out an inherent and acknowledged problem, and that's a legitimate warranty claim. have a look in Bobby's gallery as Im pretty sure there will be a technical bulletin from LR you can wave under the stealers nose. FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy

I have just told that because the car is under the Land Rover Approved warranty it is not covered but if it was covered by the Manufacturer's Warranty it might have been covered.
The Mass Dampers do not stop the dampers from knocking, they just reduce the noise in the car by 80%

Collected my car on Friday after having the bushes replaced and the mass dampers fitted and it is a totally different car. The suspension is now so quiet with no knocking what so ever.
They would not cover the mass dampers under warranty but I am glad I paid to have them fitted.

The only thing now is that they couldn't complete the 4 wheel alignment/tracking as a track rod is bent, £443 to replace Shocked

What is teh knocking everyone is referring to ?

Is it obvious to hear ?
When does it manifest itself ?

Thanks Proud owner of a 2008 TDV8 HSE.....and an Audi A3 2.0T DSG Cab and a Porsche 911 Turbo (Mercedes W208 320 CLK and Mercedes W124 E220 Estate now gone)

The mass dampers do not wear out as they are simply two 6kg blocks of cast steel bolted to existing holes in the chassis just in front of the No 2 body mountings each side of the car. It should not take more than 5-10 minutes to fit each one once the vehicle is raised high enough for access underneath.

My understanding is that they work by absorbing vibrations ie noise, that is generated by the front hydraulically actuated antiroll bar system which is bolted to the chassis. The noise is transmitted through the body mount from the chassis into the body and cabin. If there is wear in the front suspension ball joints or roll bar mounts or links that will add to that noise. The rear anti roll bar generates the same noises but it is not heard in the cabin because the noise path is different to the front.

Thanks Bob. Had the bushes done yesterday and seems to have solved the knocking... thanks the lord.. However, took it up the M5 afterwards for a wee sprint test and getting some vibration through the steering wheel and a slight pull to the left. Vibration from about 60 upwards. Do you know if this is normal post bush replacement and what's the way forward? cheers

New ARB bushes would not cause these problems. The ARB has no effect on a vehicle going in a straight line.

If you are quite sure it didn't vibrate or pull to the left under the same conditions before the bushes were replaced, the only suggestion I can make, apart from going straight back to the garage who did the work, (best idea!) is that the front wheels may not be back on the same sides as before and particularly if they are directional tyres, the treads will be working differently. Look for an arrow or words showing the direction of rotation on the sidewalls.

Good luck

Haven't had a chance to rip it up the motorway yet but i'll keep ya posted. Just for the record, garage done front and back bushes and an oil change... just over £300 inc vat... Friend prices i reckon Thumbs Up

It should already have them fitted... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
