My current tyres are Continentals 275 40 R20 106Y and they will need changing in the not too distant future. My driving is mostly on road but I do venture off road mainly on local farm fields and tracks, nothing too rough. I was off road yesterday on wet grass and a bit of mud and was not impressed with the Contis. I want to fit an all season tyre with a M&S rating as I go to Wales quite often for family reasons and need to be able to get up hills in winter conditions. On my Freelander 2 I had Perelli Scorpion Zeros and found them good but I can't find them in this size.
I also had Vredestein Wintrac 4 Extremes for the winter, but I'm not going down that road with my RRS as they are too big to store. I am not really interested in cheap tyres but obviously cost comes into it to some extent, but I do want good wear and good grip.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I've just checked pirelli website and they appear to have dropped the oem 20" pirelli scorpion all season tyres fitted to rrs1 and now concentrating on rrs2 sizes

Mine isn't even 2 years old and they've discontinued size - unbelievable

Pirelli do seem to vary their available tyres - the Scorpion ATR, for example, was unavailable in the UK in 19 inch for a couple of years. It's now back.

I'd be tempted to look at the Verde All Season if you can source some. Otherwise the Cooper Zeon LTZ or General Grabber AT are available in 275/40/20. The AT is a bit noisy but works well off road. The LTZ is also, I understand, pretty good off road and I've seen fewer noise complaints about it on the forums. Both are all terrain so are M&S marked. Neither is "all season" as such but I found the AT pretty good in recent light snow. They get good "snow reports" elsewhere as do the LTZ. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I looked at the Perilli site and found that the Scorpion Zero was not available in the right size but having looked around the web and read some reviews (Disco 3 being one) I am leaning towards the Generals, GT probably.

You can get the pirellis from tyreleader Current 2010 Range Rover Sport HSE with the usual toys: timed climate, Rosen headrest screens, tow bar with twin electrics, Blackvue HD cam

Thanks for your help but that tyre is coming up as summer not all season. Having driven on Scorpion Zeros for one winter then Veredetein Wintracs for two winters I don't want to go through a winter on anything less than an M&S tyre.

I did a lot of searching when I had my last rrs to find an all season tyre in 20" that met the ratings and the scorpion zero were all I could find so I'm pretty off now even though I have a set of winter tyres too

The Scorpion Zero Assimetrico is, as far as I know, a M&S marked tyre.

Be aware that being a M&S tyre doesn't mean it's necessarily any good in winter conditions, however; it's just something the US tyre industry came up with to distinguish a tyre with relatively large groove to block ratios. If you want a tyre that works well in winter conditions then you need a winter rated tyre - one with the mountain snowflake symbol on it. Note that winter rated tyres are M&S marked but not all M&S marked tyres are winter rated.

The Goodyear Duratrac is marked with the mountain snowflake symbol on all sizes except the 255/55/19 that is used by the Discovery. Apparently Land Rover asked for this. This is an odd situation and I can see no reason for it other than Land Rover covering their backsides in some way. Either that or they want people to think the Disco's systems are so good that they don't appear to need a winter tyre.

Having run the Wintrac for a couple of winters I can say that the Grabber AT is not as good in snow/ice. The AT gives decent enough driving traction but braking is no where near as good which unsurprising. The AT is massively better off road but then the Wintrac isn't designed as an off road tyre - even though it carries the M&S mark.

So, if you want decent winter performance then get a winter tyre. If you want decent off road performance then get an AT tyre. If on road performance is key then you'll need to go for the appropriate tyre. If you want all of those in one compromised tyre then you're going to struggle.

In your situation I'd just fit the 275/45/20 Verde All Season and inform my insurance company accordingly. It has suitable load and speed indices so there is no reason not to use it. With regards to warranties - I've been running 255/55/19 for 3 years and LR's warranty (Approved and Extended) have never turned down a claim based on tyre sizes. There have been a lot of warranty claims in those years too!

Of course this whole situation is caused by customers wanting big wheels on their 4x4. If LR fitted smaller wheels then we'd have lots more choice when it comes to tyres. So the image-conscious ruin it for those who value function over image. But that's modern life for you... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I have the Coopers, the LTZs are great, very little road noise (although I did read somewhere they might get a bit when they get to the 20k km age). they also look really great!
We don't have snow but I got them for their sidewall strength and longevity (I've had many coopers before and never had any issues always 60k+ before you even start to think about changing them...)

In 2010 when I purchased my first rrs it came with conti summer tyres and I couldn't find 20" all season tyres so fitted 19"all season in winter.

When scorpion zero all season 20" became available I ditched the contis and fitted zeros. My current rrs came fitted with zeros. Thanks for your comments. When the time comes I will be looking at the Perelli range to see if anything suits me but otherwise the General Grabber GT (not AT) looks a good bet. Also I agree that dedicated winters are the way to go, but I have had enought of a garage full of wheels. I agree that LR seems to have put style ahead of performance here by fitting large wheels requiring low profile tyres that are not what's needed for a leading , if not the leading 4 X 4 SUV. If I had the choice I would have had 19s on my RRS but 20s are the standard on the HSE Lux. I don't do bling but it seems I am in a minority in the car bying world. I saw a Freelander 2 the other day with 20s on it and I thought it looked as out of place as a Porsche with 15s. When i had my Freely I had 18s for summjer and 17s for winter and prefered the 17s. Each to their own but it don't half make buying tyres a PITA.

I have fitted 19" for winters since 2010 and prefer them to the 20" - I bought 19" winter tyres 2013 but can't say I've really needed them and pain storing/swapping.
