settings for autobrite lance

hi all

I received my magifoam and lance yesterday so looking forward to the weekend Thumbs Up

There is no instructions so just wondered what type of setting you guys use to get the thickest foam that doesn't just run off. I wasnt sure what the dials do. i assume the top one is pressure and the other open and closed some metal flaps.

thanks

jay

Not sure about that particular lance, but the best way is to experiment, it depends on water hardness as well, the softer the water the better the foam.
It might well take you a couple of washes to get it right, but make sure you jet wash the car first before applying the foam. 2005 Vesuvius 1st edition ( now sadly gone ).

put an inch of magifoam in the bottom, top up with hot water to about 5 inches

the front nozzle will fan out the foam, tight the metal flaps are and the top dial will make it foamier

a little trial and error depending on pressure washers output pressure and water hardness

thanks guys

ill just have a play then.

I have noticed some people put foam on dry and some jet wash first like you say. I would of thought putting on dry would be best as the foam is more likely to stick. ill do some digging into this

The general idea of foaming etc is to get as much dirt and grime off before you touch the bodywork with any mit or sponge, thus reducing the risk of damaging the finish of the paintwork.
So the more you can budge using the jet wash and foam the better, hence why most will jet wash first, but of course it's up to the individual. 2005 Vesuvius 1st edition ( now sadly gone ).

Make sure EVERY TIME you use it, fill the bottle back up and flush the foam out of the lance. If you don't after a couple of months it will block up and it's a bit tricky to take apart, to clean it properly. Jet washing also scratches the car by applying preasure on the dirty areas. Theres so many arguments for or against rinsing before foaming but altimately do what you think. Some people like the look of foam sticking on the car, personally I rinse lightly then foam and this is what I think works best. In my opinion. I'm not Fat. RRS TDV6 HST.

If you are going to jetwash first then make sure you have a nice wide spray pattern set and have it hitting the car at a 45 degree angle. This way the pressure is reduced (spread over a wider area) and also any grit that is dislodged should be deflected off the car rather than being pounded into the paintwork.

My usual order of things (for the body):

  • Foam
  • Rinse
  • Foam
  • Rinse
  • Wash with ONR (one panel at a time)
  • Dry washed panel with microfibre towel.. normally sprayed when wet with Sonax Xtreme Brilliant Shine detailer
  • Finishkare 1000P wax
  • Spray again with Sonax XBSD to get rid of any wax "gassing"
  • Obligatory 'stand back and admire' Cool

Wheels normally consist of:
  • Either bilberry wheel cleaner or Chemical Guys Premium Blue Wheel & Rim Cleaner
  • Agitate with brush
  • Rinse
  • Wash with ONR
  • Dry
  • Seal with Poorboys Wheel Sealant
  • Dress tyres with GTechnic T1

Used to allow ~4 hours for a "quick wash" of my Focus RS... although a quick wash of the RRSport the other day amounted to about 2.5 hours, and that didn't include waxing or doing the wheels properly (it was cold, and I was limited with available time unfortunately).

Tardis & Iron-X used in the process too every few months.. likewise, claybarring maybe 3 times a year before machine polishing / correcting.

Cheers..

Ian

Amen to that - cleaning the car at this time of year isn't that much fun if I'm totally honest Laughing

Totally mate! My paintwork is in appalling condition right now as I've only had it 3 months and the weather's been pants.. can't wait for spring either to get out there with the polisher and sort it all out.

Just a word of warning with ONR if you went that route... do NOT use it with a lambswool mitt.. use either s synthetic mitt or a proper sponge (yes, I said sponge!.. something like a zymol sponge for example). I did this and half way through washing the RS, my mitt fell apart catastrophically!

Was brand new.. half a car later:

Cheers..

Ian
