Torque Convertor noise ??

Hi all, i have just purchased from auction a 56 plate 2.7 hse sport , it has 183k on the clock with full history and 2 owners, as i was driving home i noticed a noise when i took my foot off the gas, almost like it was releasing air under the car, when i put my foot down again the noise went, also whilst at a standstill there is a whiring noise if i put it in d or r, but if i put it in n the give it a rev the noise goes when i put it in d again, the gearbox performs well, no juddering or slipping, plenty of power etc, is this the convertor on its way, or could the fluid be low etc, im fearing the worst. any info would be great thanks,

Noise when releasing gas pedal. Could this not just be something like boost preasure being released from the turbo? Like pressure coming out of a waste gate or something? Not sure if they have them but perhaps try it in neutral see if you get the same noise.

As for whirring noise possibly torque convertor if its only in drive and reverse. Theres someway of doing a stall test to check if the torque convertors nakered. I think you apply the break hard and steadily apply accelerator preasure up to 2,000 revs. Search the forum for this.

Does the whining noise happen when driving or just while stationary? I'm not Fat. RRS TDV6 HST.

You could try a 'stall' test. Check tranny fluid level first.

Put your left foot hard on the brakes and with the car in drive increase the engine revs - the torque convertor and gearbox should stall the engine. Do not hold the revs for more than about 10-15 seconds.

If you press the accelerator, and you get weird noises (its gearbox brake bands) or the engine revs continue to rise ( its torque convertor shot)

i couldnt find anyone to check the oil level for me so i did the test anyway, it will rev up to 2000 rpm but no more, i revved it for about 3 or 4 seconds, or if the oil is low would this test prove inconclusive ??

If it stalled and there were no noises I'd reckon the torque convertors fine.

No it didnt stall m8, i only revved it for a couple of seconds on 2000 rpm, would it have stalled by then ?

"Stall" doesn't mean it killed the engine merely that the revs were held at a constant speed by the torque convertor at the engine's revs for producing max torque and thus max load on the drive-line while the throttle is wide open.

When a torque convertor is shot, or the transmission's brake bands are worn or the oil is loosing viscosity the transmission is incapable of holding the engine's output.

Its similar test (but obviously a slightly different procedure) on a car with a manual gearbox to see if the clutch is shot.
