Battery and random faults

Hi all

Just some information for you all . I bought my beloved RRS HST TDV8 2yrs ago and when i got the car within a week i had a problem with the alternator and battery (typical TDV8 issues). Both these items were replaced under warranty .
Since then every so often i was getting random error messages on the instrument display only when starting the car, never while driving.
I have some diagnostic equipment and did some investigation i found all sorts of random fault codes and while cranking the car over, for a split second the volts were dropping below 10.5 volts.

Two weeks ago i had a look into what type of battery was fitted to the car It was a Bosch S3 013 720A 90Ah.
This when checked is listed as a replacement battery for the vehicle. The battery and alternator were tested and found to be in perfect working order.

I elected to remove the battery now only 18months old and replace it with a Bosch S5 013 830A 100Ah.

The result was no fault messages when starting the car stays above 10.5 volts while cranking including yesterday at -2 degrees . and the random fault codes stored all gone.

Fingers crossed this has fixed the random annoying messages and random fault codes.

Cheers all

Carlos

Interesting to read. The OE specification for the battery is 950A and 90Ah though. The implications are that your battery may struggle to provide sufficient current and the alternator will be working overtime to charge it. Land Rover now specify an AGM batttery too. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

good point Paddi. I would question who put the battery in, why they chose the spec they did? if it was under warranty then were they going cheap on you? the s3 is for smaller economy cars, from what i've read. Recently bought a 2007 RRS HSE TDV6 for a Pimp-My-Ride-Project.
DONE: Meduza front bumper, AB rear bumper, AB tailpipes, calipers repainted, rear upper tailgate upgrade, side steps, AB front grille, AB side vents, rear LED lights, clear side repeaters, integrated daytime running lights, LED headlights.
TO DO: color code sills and pillars.

The difference is usually the internal resistance of the battery. It varies between battery types and manufacturers.
I couldn't find this in the general specification.
But. if it works......

Hi

Up to now the battery is performing with no problems at all that i can see .
I have done numerous short journeys and long drives. starting it turns over so much faster than the last battery as well.

Very happy up to now .

Fingers crossed.

Carlos

AGM is 'adsorbed glass mat'. Same chemistry as a convential lead acid type just a superior internal structure which confers performance benefits. I'm sure if you Google AGM battery there will be much better descriptions than I could provide. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

The battery died on our TDV8 in March, got a gen replacement from main dealer, it was 850A, carn't remember the AH without looking but it was less than the old one. L/R had just changed there supplier to Exide so must think there a better performing battery, never had any trouble starting and it's not driven every day either. 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current
