Car won't move!

Hi guys, couldn't get logged in so had to set up a new account.

I recently bought a 2010 RRS from ebay which looked a bit worse for where, I've just had paint work, wheel alignment, new tyres etc, I was stopped at the lights just after getting the alignment done, when to pull away at the lights & I heared what sounded like a cable snap. The car would just Rev as if it was in neutral even though it was in drive, I put it into reverse and was able to go slowly to back onto the pavement but as soon as I tried to get on the pavement the car would just Rev again as if it was in neutral.

Has anyone else experienced this? I would appreciate any advice anyone can offer.

I'd check the gear linkage first. Could be a £20 fix.

Gearbox linkage is first suspect. Very common for seizing up, and causing it to jump out of gear.

Is the lever tight to move?

I've had a look underneath the car this morning, we selected gear while I looked underneath & it looked like it was selecting normally, the linkage itself looked ok, I'm not a mechanic so can't be 100% sure but they both look fine.

I started the car this morning & until you go to drive away you wouldn't realise there's a problem, it selects gear no problem, you even feel it engageing as if it's ready to drive away as you feel movement when you select drive or reverse but just revs when you try to move the car. Could this possibly be a driveshaft issue? I'm just trying to avoid thinking its a gear box.

Went to a customers car recently, where the front driveshaft had popped out of the diff, giving him no drive Question
It could also be a bust CV joint

Has it had any suspension work done recently?

Try putting it in rock crawl, and seeing if it drives when the centre diff locks

Funny you should mention the suspension work, I had just collected the car from the garage when this all happened & it had just been in getting new brakes, new rear tiebar, CV boots and park brake, the garage had just told me that they had taken the rear driveshaft out.

How do you put it in rock crawl? I've only had the car 4 weeks and yesterday was the first day I had driven it as I wanted it to be right before use by it and now this Big Cry

I put it in rock crawl and still nothing, it's just moving slightly forward in drive then slightly backwards in reverse so it's selecting gears fine etc, there's nothin on the dashboard about any faults so I'm hoping it's nothing to major.

Thanks everyone for your input, had the car recovered to a trustworthy garage who found the problem to be a damaged Nearside rear driveshaft, he asked who had done the previous work as he said they must have saw this as they had it out to carry out repairs and have just refitted the damaged part. This has made me so angry as I have just spent a lot of money with this garage putting faults right that I found myself and asked them to check it over and for them to refit a part that was visibly damaged has got my blood boiling.

I had a similar problem. Both lower arms replaced and about 20 miles after no drive. had it recovered to the same garage after I had looked at the passenger side driveshaft that had become dislodged. Why would they try to tell me that a bracket had broken and caused this fault. Thoughts!!! Thumbs Up

Trying to cover their own back ends Whistle

Though, I struggle to see why they would have had the shafts out to replace the lower arms Confused

+1 for this, never heard anything but praise for this guy. In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

Yep, know of them. I buy bits for my 1993 Rangie from them. Enthusiasts, yes!
Rovertune seem to be the favoured around here. Seeing them tomorrow for towing electrics fitting. 50% cheaper than main dealer! Visitor from fullfatrr.com
