LR at Goodwood

The big push at Goodwood this year was the new Discovery, there in concept form only of course. Continues the Evoque look with that forward sloping C pillar lifted from the Mercedes M Class.

More relevant for us was an optioned up SDV8 white RRS, 98k. On the negative (me as usual), the gap between the trim and bumper was plain to see, so it looks like it's standard. You can't see it standing up, you need to get your eye down to bumper level. I expect they are all like it, those who claim their car is fine are not looking in the right place. However it is quite a shock when you can so easily compare the Macan, the Cayenne, the M Class with the RRS.

Thoughts on options - the big RSE LCD screens get in the way; the piano black trim scratches easily (and I was told by a valeter it's a pain) so off my list, the resolution of the Central LCD screen is poor in dual view mode, the metal shift paddles are nice to look at and cool to the touch, and the boot would look better with luggage rails and the stainless threshold.

For all its gargantuan size, it still feels relatively cramped in the back.

The new RRS SVR was on the hill climb, great sounding; new front, wheel arch extensions, still disguised. Later, they drove it out of an enormous spoof packing case in the covered car display area. Awesome noise, completely blacked out so I could not see inside so evidently new interior options. Late Q1 15 availability, prices start around £88k. It's clear the Cayenne turbo is the benchmark in terms of performance and price, not the turbo S. Petrol only of course.

On the basis that you may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb, I can't see why you wouldn't go for it if you are buying an SC. Mark

Thanks Mark.

Have they announced the SVR price then? I'm surprised at the £88k.

Did you notice the brakes? Are the blue Brembo calipers on CC discs?

That's not an official price. I told an LR person there my optioned up SC AB is coming out about £88k and he said that's about where the SVR started but there was nothing specific. In reality, I think it will be more than this because some new options will be "must-haves". Their benchmark is the Cayenne turbo as I said and they cannot go mad on pricing.

The brake callipers are indeed blue. Take a look in my gallery and you can just make out the brake calliper behind the spokes of the new wheels. Ceramics, if offered, are bound to be very expensive.

Notice too the brake cooling inlets on the front; it certainly looked the part with slightly flare wheel arches, those new wheels. Makes the AB look a bit plain-Jane by comparison.

The noise is awesome. It's a great sound with crackles and pops when you blip the throttle. Going to be a monster. Fuel economy is the same in normal cycles because the extra power comes at the top end where I expect it will drink hugely.

Off roading is unaffected though approach angle slightly reduced though can be corrected apparently by removing the lower section of the front apron.

Interesting, helpful guy.

Edit: Just uploaded a close-up of that blue calliper; sorry the quality is not great, I'd just come in from Italy and didn't have a decent camera with me. Mark

I think the forward sloping pillar is from their own stable - the Freelander 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

If you go onto the twitter feed #SoundofSVR, there's a lot of interesting stuff including a sound recording of the exhaust and a picture of the huge blue Brembo front brake calipers. Mark

Yes, I was wondering whether the discs are ceramic - Don't look like it, but can't be sure from any of the photos I've seen.

I doubt the brakes are ceramics as standard if they are offered at all. On a Cayenne turbo, they are a £6k option. I would have thought that for normal road use, large diameter steel discs will be enough. Mark

It will be interesting to see if the production version is as noisy, hard to believe it gets through the noise regs. Still, what's not to like? Mark

Nothing that a set of valves (which can by bypassed) can't fix.

As long as they set it up like the AM Vantage - one simple fuse removal and you get the full noise all the time! SOLD - 15 plate Estoril SVR

SOLD - 64 plate Aleutian Silver Supercharged

SOLD - 63 plate Corris SDV6 Autobiography
