Thinking of Auto Cruise Control when I eventually get a build date. (October Order still waiting). Any thoughts?

A fantastic thing to have. Once you have had it standard cruise is lacking.

Were it not standard on the AB, I wouldn't bother with it. Mark

We have it on two cars and I wouldn't like to have a car without it but it clearly is a personal preference. Wink

Strangely it's one of the things that makes me resist moving to the D4. I'd like the extra room in the boot but having enjoyed ACC for a couple of years I'm not sure I'd want to be without it. Confused

The new version also has queue assist which brings the car to a stop and starts going again when the traffic starts to move off. That sounds perfect. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Likewise I now would not buy a car without it.

It was even a factor in my decision to swap from a TDV8 to the MY14 HSE Dynamic. ACC on the new Sport works down to a complete stop, invaluable when travelling in and out of London on the M4 or M40. MY2010 TDV8 purchased Jan 2017

I have now had ACC on my last 5 cars.

Two were MB and three have been RRS.

I think they all use the same system developed by Bosch?

On the MY14 RRS the ACC works perfectly in 90-95% of situation and you quickly get to know and recognise the scenarios where it will need some human intervention.

My last MB had automated steering as well as radar cruise control, only worked on. M ways and major A roads but was spookily accurate. The only but serious fault was the need to loosely hold the wheel while the car did the steering.

It would probably work well on the RRS with its fold down arm rests but on the MB E class there are no convenient arm rests so it is actually more tiring than steering yourself. MY2010 TDV8 purchased Jan 2017
MY14 HSE Dynamic 3.0 SDV6 sold Sept 2015
MY 2010 TDV8 sold April 2014
MY 2007 V6 HSE sold July 2013

I don't think the need to have your hands - or at least one hand - on the wheel is a fault, it's a legal requirement.

Leaving aside the fact that you may need to react to an emergency and not having your hands on the wheel could increase your time to react to, for example, a blow-out, under current legislation you could be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention with both hands off the wheel.

Such technology is a step towards hands-off driving but my guess is that cars will become over-burdened with technology and the legislators will move very slowly in loosening the reins. Mark
