Recall anti-theft

A large number of new model Range Rover and Range Rover Sports have been stolen here in Sweden, it's been all over the news. Today I received a letter from Land Rover about the thefts and they wanted to update the car because of that.

Do you guys in the UK also gets this recall, and do you know what it actually is?

Here you can see all the stolen Range Rovers in Sweden, it's quite a long list and RRs are not that common here!

Reports like this, and that of someone on this forum whose car was stolen in Italy, do raise concerns about the security of our cars when the subject of determined criminal activity. Obviously there's nothing to be done if the keys are left in the car, lost, demanded at knife point and so on but an RR seems to be sufficiently quality currency to encourage theft by hacking into the security system.

There's no corresponding recall showing currently here in the UK. Mark

So... I did my anti-theft recall which consisted of upgrading software for the lock/alarm-system.

It seems that the new RR and RRS only needs a software upgrade, while the old RRS, RR and Disco 4 owners need gets new hardware and that LR need to customize some part of the software for every car.

This must be expensive for them Smile

Indeed it will be expensive but LR cannot afford to have a reputation of their cars being available to steal on demand. Mark

Mark_N, of course... The dealer told me this issue have been around since Oct/Nov -13 and that many customers have been really worried about this.

So it's good there's finally a solution!

Many manufacturers are having issues with the security on their cars. Essentially, thieves can buy kits off the internets which can be plugged into the cars ODB port and from there a blank key can be configured which enables the thief to open the car and drive it away (overriding the alarm and Immobiliser). It appears BMW's have suffered the most but the same issues apply to Audi's, some Merc's & Fiat's etc.

Check this CCTV footage out of a BMW 1M being stolen in less than 3 mins

Well... Every car can be stolen, the issue here in Sweden have been that RR owners have been targeted specifically. The increase of stolen RRs between 2012 and 2013 was 360%.

And, all Discovery 4s, RR and RRs between 2010 and 2014 have been recalled for this problem so in some ways LR should have done their homework from the start.

I couldn't even insure my wife's new RRS in our usual insurance company because of this, I hope it will be possible in a few months. Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Dynamic -14

After the ****bag broke the glass and reach in, why didn't the cars alarm go off?

Evidently, they cut a small hole in the window and can reach the ODB port without activating the alarm as it is just out of range for the motion sensors.

There are a number of threads on PH about this. A number of insurance companies were not willing to payout for cars that were stolen without keys until this footage went vital. Current:

Blimey!
Hopefully that would be harder to do on cars with laminated windows (double glazing) like the RRS and FFRR. Current...

In the UK most insurers demand that you install a tracking device. It does not prevent theft but adds an extra guard and most cars with trackers are found pretty quickly after a theft. Secondly, car theft in the UK is relatively low compared to the Continent as we are an island and drive in the wrong side of the road. The insurance premium for my Disco 4 is about 3 times higher in Austria than my RRS here in the UK.

Has anyone ever asked tracker how many cars are recovered with trackers fitted and how many with trackers fitted are not. I had a RS4 and many people had their cars stolen with trackers and never saw them again. I had two trucks stolen with trackers and they were never recovered. These people are good at what they do and know where trackers are fitted also the trackers do not work in an underground car park or a container.

The tracker being fitted to mine also has VHF technology which will work in containers and underground car parks apparently. Current...

The problem I have with security devices is that there is always a way round them. When chip and pin arrived the banks told us that these were infallible and if someone withdrew money then we must have given them our pin and so it was our loss not theirs but we all found out this was not true. The problem also is that if they wait for you or break your door down and take your keys and tell you that they want 4 hrs before you report it stolen, if you do not comply something horrible will happen to your family what do you do.

Well the VHF on my boat would probably not work in a container and is probably much more powerful.

VHF is relatively short range and does not like obstructions!

Do you have a link to this tracker? I would be interested to read about it. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled
